How do you use your browser or browsers?

  1. Is there a method behind the madness as Linus claimed a few weeks back referring to rocking 5 browsers i believe - each with numerous (double digit) tabs?
  2. To-date, because of work I only use two browsers, Chrome for personal life and Firefox for work - nothing tech related, i am in fact a teacher and we use Gmail at work, so it just keeps the accounts (and searches) separate.
  3. Now i would like to do some research to see how people use browsers to quite Linus he said he knew where everything was.

E.g

  • IE - Compatibility?
  • Firefox - Social
  • Chrome - Work
  • Opera - News
  • Safari - Forums?

Just some ideas - I personally am always opening and closing Chrome, so perhaps it would be nice to have a new paradigm of how i use the browsers and tabs.

In an earlier stream, Linus said that he uses this many browsers because of his YouTube accounts (LTT, Tech Quicky, LinusCatTips etc.). He knows that he can sign in with multiple accounts in one browser, but he know exactly which browser is which so he won't change it :)

Edit: I use FireFox, I haven't tried Chrome, but people seem enthusiastic over it. Might wanna try it some day.

Correct. He uses them to manage all his YouTube channels because Gmail is attached to YouTube, so if he signs into his LinusCatTips channel, but wants to go onto his LinusTechTips email, he'll be signed out of his YouTube channel.

I use Chrome and Opera. I switch back and forth every other day.

I use Firefox and Chrome, Chrome is used for everything I stay signed into such as gmail, twitter, Facebook, ect, and Firefox is used for all general internet surfing, I also make use of different Chrome profiles (I have 4) essentially giving me 4 completely independent Chrome browsers, which I also use for staying signed into things that don't stay signed into happily with other sites or if I do not want a certain extension with a site I'm signed into.

Linus could also use different Chrome profiles to manage his YouTube accounts, although it is not perfect sometimes the icons in the taskbar do not show their little 'symbol' identifying which Chrome is which, something using completely different browsers solves.

I use firefox for personal stuff and chrome for some school accounts which I manage (loads of stuff on google accounts and to begin with using the same browser I ended up liking videos with my school alias). I also use firefox as my main web dev platform, but test on chrome and IE (cba at the moment to install opera or safari). On firefox now I have 69 tabs open, most of them I haven't actually loaded the content to.

I don't have dozens of tabs open, mostly because I keep track of everything, and 20+ tabs is a bit too much to keep track of. If I need to remember a page for some other time, I use bookmarks and access it later.

I once accidentally clicked 'open every unread post' on my RSS feeds in Chrome (this before going to bed) and it opened about 170+ tabs in it. I was quite surprised it didn't crash at all and all tabs loaded just fine. I fell asleep going through half of it..LOL

I don't like Chrome because of Google. If I started to use chrome it would be chromium. I understand why Linus got all browsers, and if I where in a similar seat I would do that too. My main browser is Firefox and then on my secondary monitor I put up opera for grooveshark, youtube and random stuff.

You will actually find that most companies ONLY support IE.

However, IE is quickly loosing market holding while Chrome is taking it, FF is also loosing theirs slightly while more and more people are switching to Chrome.  Personally I use Chrome for everything, IE for the Application Sites that require it, I usually use FF for debugging and development tools.  I keep Safari and Opera for compatibility testing.  Outside that, I also have a VM with XP and Mint for Web Development and testing.  Guess I should also mention that I have virtual phone boxes as well for making sure mobile versions of websites are working correctly.

As a web developer I've had to deal with all the naysayers and ridiculous claims as to what supports what.  Honestly IE has made HUGE improvements, but Chrome is just becoming so popular people have stopped caring.  Chrome does have a few issues with flash players, (found that to be the completely annoying popping sound coming from my computer).  FF, in my professional opinion, is probably the best all around browser someone can use, until Chrome fixes it's great many development issues.  I do however love the fact that Chrome uses a new process for each tab, so if one tab has something on it that causes a crash, it only crashes that tab and not the entire browser.

Oh, and for the tabs, it's not uncommon for me to have 20+ tabs open at a time.

Most companies USE it on their computers, is that what you mean by support? In that case it doesn't really matter. I've come across a fair few compatibility issues with IE in the last year while using the computers at uni that run it. It also lacks features like extensions which make it essentially useless compared to FF and Chrome. Chrome is the most fully featured browser for the average user with browser syncing for both Andoid and iOS, plus it has the widest and best app/extension support, as well as like you said, the best tab process handling (in terms of stability and security).I won't use FF purely because of the lack of good extensions and syncing ability that Chrome offers me.

Chrome - 3 tabs, LTT forums, Overclock.net, Youtube.

IE - I have an email account that forwards to the one I use through Chrome, I just use IE to make sure Google doesn't close the account every month or so.

No, I mean the fact that the company's intranet applications are developed on Microsoft servers and are developed specifically for use with IE.  Typically they will break down in FF, Opera, and Safari, and typically just outright don't work in Chrome.

This includes the US Military's Web Portal (mail, filesharing, etc) and DoD applications; along with companies such as Dell, HP, Mars, and the ticketing software used by most every healthcare company I've ever had the misfortune of working with (Including 3 of the largest healthcare companies in the US and Canada).
