When I had my first computer I got from my dad I decided to buy some UV lights (these: 973924_LB_00_FB.EPS_250.jpg)

And I had NO idea how to plug them in so I (for some unknown reason) just decided to plug it in where it looked like it was supposed to be, I can't remember what I did but I connected something to the motherboard and I ended up setting the motherboard on fire when starting the computer, and the fire from the mobo burnt the GPU, so I went to the PC Repair shop and they told me they couldn't fix it then they wanted 100$ bucks just for telling me that, so I ended up never returning to get the PC back and paying the 100 bucks.

 

I also bought these kind of lights about 6 months ago and I took about 30 minutes to plug them in just because I was still scared of setting my PC on fire, even though this incident was many years ago.

When I had my first computer I got from my dad I decided to buy some UV lights (these: 973924_LB_00_FB.EPS_250.jpg)

And I had NO idea how to plug them in so I (for some unknown reason) just decided to plug it in where it looked like it was supposed to be, I can't remember what I did but I connected something to the motherboard and I ended up setting the motherboard on fire when starting the computer, and the fire from the mobo burnt the GPU, so I went to the PC Repair shop and they told me they couldn't fix it then they wanted 100$ bucks just for telling me that, so I ended up never returning to get the PC back and paying the 100 bucks.

 

I also bought these kind of lights about 6 months ago and I took about 30 minutes to plug them in just because I was still scared of setting my PC on fire, even though this incident was many years ago.

I have those exact lights :lol:

I built my first PC last year and I bought parts that were just their to be upgraded later but now that I look back at it I could of saved so much money by just buying the higher end parts first.

Buying an HP Compaq Ex-Lease PC. Threw a decent gpu in it and an extra hard drive, but now i need a new case due to being low profile and i want to put it on the floor. I will now have to buy a new motherboard, cooler and possibly ram because 1. The motherboard does not conform to any standard motherboard screw hole pattern. 2, the cooler is being used to hold the motherboard to the case. and 3. a lot of motherboards from the era were either ddr2 with 2 dimm lanes or ddr3 with 4 dimm lanes. I have a board with ddr2 and 4 dimm lanes (All of which are populated, 6GB (2x2gb 2x1gb)).

I once pumped 36.1 volts through a circuit with a single 150ohm resistor. It lit up like a ultrabright LED... but only for a few seconds. Good thing I wasn't stupid enough to touch the board, or otherwise I'd probably be dead.

Thought an i7 and 8 gigs of ram was enough to make my pc fast. I got a laptop with a gt 740m and a 5400rpm hard drive.

I listened to a BestBuy rep and got a laptop with a 730m and an i7, he said it would max out like every game, I only had the selection of bestbuy due to needing the financing option so my parents could help pay for it, $899, $200 insurance, and 6 months later, the PC overheated and died (I used a fan behind it and ice packs under it to keep it from overheating till then, I ended up getting a full refund using the Better Business Bureau to process a claim, I then educated myself on computer hardware and got a 4690k and a 970 =P

Come to think of it, a laptop I bought from a friend. I got $250 for my birthday, and that's ALL I got. No fancy tech stuff, just the money. I spent ALL the money on the laptop because I thought it would be well worth it.

 

 

Turns out I don't leave my room... How could I have missed that? Laptops are great!

I was trying to fix 2 laptops from this co-worker of my uncle's that both had locked boot up screens. One trick that usually worked was removing the battery to reset the bios but that didn't work. But in the process I ended up ruining the mobo somehow and it wasn't posting. Very sad day T.T

I would do that, buy my case doesn't allow me to do it.

Yeah I have fans on top of my case but wish I could put the radiator out there. Only way to do that is with a custom loop though :(

I didn't know about static charging when I helped a friend building a PC back when I was like 11 years old.

I didn't discharge myself and killed (thank god not the GPU/CPU) my own HDD I brought with me back then.

screwing in my all in one watercooler too hard, It killed my mobo, which forced me to wait 16 days for a replacement.

buying a h110i gtx cpu cooler which didnt fit in my zalman z11 so had to buy a new case - went for a corsair 450d

You're lucky, I'm stuck with my z11 now...

It would take the absolute best circumstances but 0.24A is sufficient to stop the human heart. :/

Not on my pc but on my old xbox 360. I spent hours flashing the cd drive code thingy over to a new drive i installed, after hours of slaving away i plugged the drive in, however i put the power cable the wrong way round, drive fried....... £50 and 5 hours of work down the drain haha.

Yeah but you touch it and the current that flows through /you/ is going to be much smaller. The lowest resistance your body is likely to have (given wet skin, or a cut) is 1000 ohms, giving a current of 0.036, which wouldn't kill you. In most scenarios, your resistance would be more like 100,000 ohms, giving a negligible current.
