Worst Tech mistake you have ever made?

I plugged the two case fan headers the wrong way and thought for 2 weeks, damn my pc is very silent until I looked into the side panel and realised the case fans were not spinning.

Not sure which is worse...lol.

 

A: Spilled a glass of sherry on the keyboard of an XP-based laptop in 2006; which went on running for about 6 months before dying entirely

 

or

 

B: Built an FX 8150-cored machine on an Asrock 770 iCafe mobo in late 2012; that burned out with heavy A/V editing use in slightly less than 3 years.

worst one i made that i can think of, i was about 5 i think, cant remember that far back, but i did the good ol', 'knife in the electrical socket', only change is, the socket had an early cordless phone power adapter plugged into it, and i ran a butter knife across the power prongs. needless to say, some sparks flew. ive been an electronics nut ever since. 

main/gaming system: intel core i7 5930K, 16GB Gskill ddr4, asus X99 deluxe, 2 titan X's in SLI, corsair AX860 PSU, noctua NH-d15, samsung 512 PRO SSD, 2+3 seagate HDD's, blu-ray ODD, corsair graphite 780t.   game capture system: AMD FX 8350 BE, 16GB ram (left over parts from torn down system), asus ROG crosshair V formula-z, GTX 770 SC, avermedia live gamer HG capture card, elgato HD60 s external usb3 capture device, OCZ 700w, cryorig M9a, kingston 250GB SSD(left over part from torn down system), seagate 1TB internat HDD, seagate backup plus 5TB USB 3 extrenal drive, corsair carbide 200R.

I thought thumb screws were for the motherboard and stripped all the standoffs and got them stuck in the standoffs so my motherboard had thumbscrews stuck in it

Cutting both wires of a Lithium-Polymer battery at the same time. It shorted out and I had to throw it out my window before it exploded in my face.

When I was younger I once brazenly ignored the Voltage rating on an electrolytic capacitor and slapped it in a Voltage Conversion circuit.

Instant smoke, hiss, POP. Scared the crap out of me.

I also majorly regretted my old PC Case (I just replaced it with a new one) as it only had room for GPUs as long as a mATX board is wide (24cm I think?). Severely limiting my options.

A few years ago I was cleaning paste of an older AMD CPU, I put it on a anti static electricity plate and started rubbing the paste of with some alcohol, after I was done and the chip was shiny, I realised the AMD has the pins on the CPU and not in the socket like with Intel, and I had thus bent the pins on the CPU

Fortunately I was able to bend all pins back except for 1, and even more lucky.. The pin was a unused one so the CPU still worked fine :D

But it did gave me a little hart attack

I think i put my hard drive in a certain mode in my bios and when it would try to boot into the OS i got this jumble of strange characters showing up and my hard drive eventually corrupted itself, that's how my Segate died.

My worst mistake has to be accidentaly dropping my cpu while holding it about 5cm above the socket on my first build which is in my signature, THANKFULLY nothing broke and my pc is running just fine.

I was trying to fix 2 laptops from this co-worker of my uncle's that both had locked boot up screens. One trick that usually worked was removing the battery to reset the bios but that didn't work. But in the process I ended up ruining the mobo somehow and it wasn't posting. Very sad day T.T

Buying a 2gb GTX 960. Even though it was $150 when I bought it, the fact that it currently bottlenecks itself (uses 100% of vram and %60 of GPU in vram-intensive games) with the 2gb of RAM is a serious annoyance. I wish I would've bought a 380 4gb or really anything but what I bought.

When I was younger I once brazenly ignored the Voltage rating on an electrolytic capacitor and slapped it in a Voltage Conversion circuit.

Instant smoke, hiss, POP. Scared the crap out of me.

Last year in my engineering class we had to work with breadboards to try to get an LED to light up. It prove very challenging for one of my friends, who managed to burn countless resistors in the process.
