Is X99 worth it for gaming?

I'm going to build an a gaming computer and im wondering if X99 is work? I like an awesome looking X99 ASRock Fatality motherboard for $250 dollars, the 5820k doesn't cost that much more than an 4790k and 16gb corsair vengence lpx is $200. If i were not do do x99 is would be a $300 asus maximas vii formula a 4790k and 16gb ddr3 for $180. Which which set of components should i buy? Also since X99 is the newest doesnt that mean it's going to become the new standard?

Xxx is never the standard; in fact I wouldn't even say Zxx is the standard either.

X99 solely for gaming is not worth it.

No. Absolutely not.

Even the 4790k is way overkill for gaming. Aside from media production, the 4690k keeps up with the i7 in almost every way.

Not at all. Not worth the money. Learn from my mistake - I wasted my money going to X99 for gaming.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

X99 is luxury. If you can afford it and you fancy it do it.

If youre looking for a pure gaming rig, then no it wont make a difference.

Intel 4790 K - R9 295X2 - Gigabyte Z97-SLI - Corsair Vengeance Pro Black 1866 CAL9 - Corsair HX 1000 -Samsung 850 EVO SSD - Samsung HDD - H100I - Corsair C70 - G400 Logitech - Asus VS247H - WASD custom mechanical and QCKPAD!

Staples of LTT: Getting an 4690 K will resurrect your lost family members, AMD = More heat thus AMD = Satan.

Nope. Not at all.

Unless you have a budget of upwards $3000, or need the extra PCI-E lanes, X99 is never worth it for gaming.

No, except for some insane setup like 4 way SLI 980s which would need the PCI lanes.

If you can afford it there's no good reason not to get it. The i7-5820K is an absolute BEAST of a CPU. However an i5-4690K or i7-4790K would have zero problem playing every game in existence for the next few years. I mean if you're gonna be spending $300 on a motherboard anyways and getting a 4790K, why not spend the extra $50-100 for a six core?

However no, it's not really standard. It's on a different path than Z97.

Entry-Level: H61 -> H81

Business (also entry-level): B65 -> B75 -> B85

Mainstream: H67 -> H77 -> H87 -> H97

Performance: Z67 -> Z77 -> Z87 -> Z97

Enthusiast/Pro: X59 -> X79 -> X99

So yeah X99 is newer, but it's not an evolution of the previous mainstream/performance segment. It's on a whole other level.

Can't you still do 4way SLI on z97/87 boards with enough PCI-e lanes to the PCH instead of the CPU?

From a fellow owner of a 5960X and X99 platform in general, as much as I would like to say that it is worthy platform for gaming it really isn't. In some games you will see a couple of FPS increase, but it is definitely not worth it for you to pay the price premium. X99 will never become a standard, since it is the enthusiast platform. Z97 is the mainstream platform and it is not going away.

Okay this is one extreme case that x99 actually is worth it. A plx chip doesn't give you extra PCIe lanes, no matter how much we might wish it. The way it works is closer to hyper threading than an actual New PCIe lane. In most cases the lane's aren't totally saturated, and through creative scheduling you can make it appear that they're all running properly. If you push it past the limit however......Well people are complaining about 970's hitting the limit......

i5 is enough .. seriously, you guys are really not in shape, DX12 is going to change things really quick. i7's won't matter anymore, and they don't now.

Way overkill. Socket 2011 was made to cater for entuahiasts. An unlocked i5 is enough for gaming.

Think about the long term, how long will you be using this build? It is just 2 years or 7 years? software gets updated and so does games. When a game demands more, will you regret getting a core i5 instead of a core i7? Piece both builds and see which one is more worth it in the long run. Was checking out some ddr4 to upgrade, have 8gb now would like to up to 16gb. 8gb of crucial ddr4 2400 is $85. When i first got it was $130. Ddr3 is about $20 bucks cheaper.

It is not normallly worth it but since their is less than 100$ in pricing then I would fully go with x99 if you wanted to. But, z97 and i5 4690k would be enough for gaming

for SLI only since it will work on 8x/8x

for crossfire though, not sure about 8x/4x/4x and 4x on the pch..Linus did not / does not recommend this setup

crossfire doesn't really care if you've got a bad signal, just that the signal is there.

Well, I mean things like this:  http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-maximusviextreme

Which say they're 4 way compatible (not that I'd ever use more than 2 cards), but the socket type CPUs can only ever support 16 lanes.  Is it the PCH that controls the other lanes?  Or is there some crazy electrical shit going on that I don't know about?

usually a PLX chip that "schedules" how the lanes talk to the cpu.
