ODiN "projection mouse" announced on Kickstarter

ahhming

Tech startup Serafim launches campaign for virtual laser touchpad

ODiN is a mouse that functions like a trackpad, only it uses projected lasers rather than traditional hardware. The mouse works by sitting on a desk and projecting a "trackpad" onto the surface in which the user can control their computer's cursor.

The manufacturer, Serafim, is claiming this is the first-ever projection mouse, and it is designed for anything you're currently using your regular mouse for, whether casual browsing or gaming or any other number of things. Serafim also claims that because the projection is flat on the desk, there's no curve in the wrist like you get with a traditional mouse, increasing the comfort during use.

User can use different gestures familiar to trackpad users, including pinch-to-zoom and using two fingers to scroll.

The device itself measures in at 4cm x 5cm and weighs 40 grams.

They are seeking $50,000 USD in funding on Kickstarter. Currently they are at $30,000 with 58 days remaining. The early bird version of the mouse costs $50 USD and will be in the buyer's color preference. It will ship globally in June.

If it'll be anything like the projection keyboard, I wouldn't expect much of it.

Rather than it being a mouse, why dont they make it to be like a Graphics Tablet?!?!? Executives could use it to sign documents and more. its small, mobile, and probably cheaper than any tablets. : P

It's really cool and all, and I'm all for innovative technology. But there is no way this will be as comfortable as a good mouse :P

Came here thinking it would be a projected hologram mouse you could move around.

Also this thing will fail miserably.

This.

I was expecting a small dot or mouse-shaped outline that you place your hand on and then follows your hand arround via motion detectors or something.

This is just stupid. Why would I go to all the effort plugging in a usb cable etc. when I could just do the same with AN ACTUAL MOUSE?

What desktop computer doesnt have a mouse already, why would I trade that for a touchpad, and why would I want a touchpad with no tactile feedback on its keys when I'm using a laptop that already has AN ACTUAL TOUCHPAD?

Sorry really struggling to find an actual purpose for this.

The projected keyboard was a failure. I don't see how this will be much different. Nice gimmick, doesn't look like it would be practical to replace a regular trackpad or mouse.

Look at the device, it pretty much says everything about the whole thing. It's a gimmick, nothing more.

You probably can install your own feedback. Just put something on the button spot, done.

I would probably go for a real trackpad if I wanted to. This one's even magical ! :)
