February 20, 2015 - The WAN Show Document

LinusTech

I was joking, yeah @LinusTech read dis shit ^^^^ dis is da best.

If I truly wanted to, I probably could've delved deeper and maybe I should start changing headlines that are so openly biased but I think Linus got that when he joked about how biased Apple Insider was, cause of course Apple Insider will suck up to Apple as much as humanly possible and say nice things.

But as they say, I don't get paid enough for that. I don't paid at all actually, so if Linus wants to start paying me....

:P

Where? i only see the announcenment video, the wan show itself, and then 22 seconds of video?

Seems like there isn't an After Party archive this time.

not sure if this should be posted here on something more specialised but it relates to the after show talk about youtube - and can I too request that you make the recording available albeit one way would be as a pay only access video accessed from this site and hosted by you on some hosting space - thus giving you control over the content

I hope I'm not just telling you how to suck eggs - I would be interested in your opinions

There seems to be a lot of parallels between being doing a youtube channel and being in a band

When a band signs up to record company they often get a bad deal, a situation where the record company gets basically all the money from the album sales, whether that money is paid as an advance which is set against recording costs, studio time, publicity etc, the reality is that most band have to be very very successful before they see dollar one from album sales. the solution to to this is that bands make there money from performing. The air time they get, the albums they sell, these all create an audience who then come to their gigs and as the gigs grow if they manage to organise them so that they actually make money then they can start to make reasonable money on ticket sales. But where most bands make there serious dough is through Merch. By having T-shirts made for them and selling them.

I am sure you can see the parallels with youtube except that rather than going out on tour you try to persuade people to come to your site where you can either monetise their views or sell them premium access without ads.  Equally Merch is increasingly being offered by various sites because the profit that can be made is significant, people like being part of the tribe and wearing the colours of the tribe in the form of clothing is as old as the hills.

What I am wondering is - there are competitors to youtube and I have heard of these competitors trying to poach the highest subscriber groups over to their site by offering a better deals, and I can see this leading to agents taking on youtube channels and then getting them a much better cut in exchange for a percentage. However right now it seems very much like the relationships many sports have in the past to the owners of the leagues or the teams. One where they say they will look after you and you will make a good living and like actors in the acting industry - you could make fair money - but the lionshare of the profit went to the owners and that's how things remained for years until something changed:

Actors and writers and sports people - Unionised - by forming common bonds across multiple groups they went on strike and after some bluster the owners capitulated.

A classic example of this was in the early seventies when publishing houses held the whip hand. The writer would get an advance on sales and after handing in the text, the company decided that the book wouldn't sell they would ask for the advance back, or they would sell it but would take the author years to earn out the advance, all the while working from advance to advance generating content and the publishing house being able to delete their book from stock, to not print or to pulp existing stock. I am sure you can see the parallels with youtube.

I wonder what would happen if all the big tech news channels went on strike?

However, that route might not actually be necessary because of the disintermediation of the net, that youtube is about advertising your content and persuading people to get their content via you rather than via youtube

A classic example is the of waterfall method that is followed by film and television producers of the content first going to people/companies who have bought exclusivity, then to companies who have bought the right to show the show one day after another , then as box sets of video's, then the video is distributed for download or box sets and at each step the price drops. So with linus tech tips if I have a paid membership I get exclusive content, cheaper merch, shows before others, then most of that content becomes available on the main channel with ad support perhaps released via torrent to reduce the hosting costs and notified to people via RSS feed, then only after that does the content goes to youtube  etc. Unless of course youtube signs a special deal with you to get the content first but that's exclusivity costs.

As you said you and youtube are in symbioses but the simple reality is the stronger and more widely known you become the less you need youtube and the more they need you.

X

PS can I say how useful the commentary about youtube was on the wan show, I wish i could have it as a separate video, but the nature of this is only going to be interesting to those who are actually interested in the in the trenches view of production, so can I suggest that either you or a group of tech channels start a youtube channel where all these conversations can go, you could also post video's that relate to talking turkey about youtube production, which a number of your videos are about.

When I see video's that seem to me directly relate to youtube production I add them to a list https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLancDWWJp83xPBGuSb1UJpRsZMzuxhLDQI would certainly be interested in any sugestions?

On the subject of videogames, i agree that nowadays they are much easier than back in the day. people just dont seem to have the same attention span or just resort to walkthroughs if they are stuck somewhere. i dont think graphics actually matter. i think 2014 was a great year for videogames on a wierd way, because the few AAA games released were so bad that the best games were all indie games like Lethal League, Fistful of Frags...

Also, on a sidenote, whats up with rockstar's multiplayer? Rockstar fans have been making and updating great multiplayer platforms for their old games with a decent amount of players (over 100).

The only pros of the official multiplayer on GTA IV and GTA V is that theres actually AI, but for the rest, it seems that community-made mods like MTA are just better (number of players, netcode-wise, gamemodes...)

Mr. Linus will future after parties be uploaded on YouTube?

I also liked watching the after party but I am not available to watch it live.   I hope they start uploading them to you tube again or making them available as a past broad cast on twitch.

When I was a kid my cousin gave me an original game boy then about a year later my parents bought me a PS2 and I enjoyed them equally because while the PS2 was much more advanced I could take the game boy with me and play whenever I wanted.

He was referring to the clock frequency. It does sort of matter, but you can't judge a processor by its clock frequency - because different processors do different amounts of work per clock cycle. A high clock frequency may sound impressive, but if the processor only does very little work per clock cycle, it can still have poor performance.

he did in the after show before they got to his garage sale

I wish they would release the after show regularly but especially the one where he talks about the complexity around you tube

talk about bad timing with you tube - he's fighting hard to grow the company and make sure money is coming in and youtube tries to take half his in video earnings

Geekbeat were talking about it

they were pointing out that their are multiple platforms from big vendors starting up from hulu

It would take much for twitch to extend to video upload, or for say Facebook/Yahoo/Microsoft to buy Machinima, the cost of entry into the field is dropping all the time, and at some point youtube is going to wake up and recognise that its content, not them, that is king!

yes, I am pretty aware of IPCs especially in desktop..i thought he meant something else when it comes to smartphones' processors..

i guess we can never know these processors work per clock on just webpages..or can we? :D

I completely agree with the old-school game experiment. I'm only 20 but I still have high respect for old games and what they did for modern gaming today, so much so that I still play retro games from time to time, I recently started playing the original Zelda and my friends frequently get together to play original Mario Party.

Same here bro! Zelda and Mario Party are timeless classic. I'm only 19 but I grew up with arcade emulators and quake 3. I still have a deep love for good 2D games, specially from NeoGeo.
