14-year old hacks modern vehicle with just $15 in parts

Part of the 2014 CyberAuto Challenge a 14 year old boy bought some parts from a cheap electronics store for around $15 and spent the night assembling a homemade circuit board. The next day, he was able to operate the vehicle’s wipers, lights, door locks, and even the remote start feature.

He even played a song from his phone through the car’s speakers, flashing the headlights.

 

And yes, I know the ability to do this is not really news but a 14 year old boy, an iphone and $15 worth of electronics and less than 24 hours is bloody impressive and freaking scary. Car manufacturers need to beef up the security on their cars asap

I'm 14 and the best thing I can do is pee without touching the seat.

How about trying to learn at lynda.com , afaik you can even get a free trial thanks to linus :D (don't know if they teach this kind a stuff though)

I just know that anything with any sort of wireless connection is not secure no matter what software stuff they do to it.

he probably used some kind of arduino with a wifi board to control relays to turn on lights and locks and stuff, in fact there is a radioshack arduino camera board as well, which is where the article said he got the parts.
