NVIDIA digs deep as latest driver 347.29 on GTX900M series disable overclocking feature

When have you ever been able to overclock a laptop gpu anyway? (except for rare occasions) I don't see a problem with this honestly average laptops do not have the cooling capacity to deal with an overclocked chip, hell they barely deal with stock clocked chips.

I can tell you for sure the GTX 750m thats inside all newer macbook pro's can overclock. I looked into it but decided against it since I payed over $300 for the 3 year applecare warranty and overclocking would void that.

Did you really go with stock cards? because aftermarket AMD cards don't overheat. Stock cards suck.

Lets list some:

4850: Artifacting and crashing after 1 month. was an MSi one.

4870X2: Same as the 4850 but 1 yr and 6 months before it died was a BFG Card.

7970: Overheated after 2 months. HiS

7950: DOA HIS Too.

And then the good one!

RADEON X600 256MB DDR1 ATi

Got it for free from a car boot sale, it was BRAND NEW IN BOX!!!! SEALED! got it about 2yrs ago, card is from 2004-5

Working fine 24/7 in my server since 2 yrs! (Needed display for my server)

Not going AMD. I've tried enough cards (7970, 7950, 270,265,285,Even back to the 4870X2) And if they werent DOA, They would overheat, or the drivers were CRAP and crashed on me, and so on.

Too bad for you, my experince with AMD has been great so far.

I've once killed a gt 435m while overclocking it. 

 

But my 6970m did not die though... gave my old laptop to my younger sibling and its still running fine.

Well... im kinda very dissapointed on Nvidia for the 900 series. i might just get 3 780Tis for my new rig instead of 3 970.

 

get 3x 780 6GB cards, and you'll be good for a long time.

They are actually helping you save your laptop from destroying your battery and other component last longer. Gold star for Nvidia. Besides who overclocks a laptop?

With the thermal and power restrictions that are on laptops i can't imagine OCing them being a good idea.

You do realize you represent a very small minority of the market? And that the average user might kill it because they dont know?
You do realize it would create more heat and create other problems on the laptop and then you'd scream RMA for something you caused? (Batteries are pretty heat sensitive you know)

You can still get a gaming laptop? I doubt any laptop has enough headroom for overclocking to make a difference anyway.

OK here is the thing. you CAN overclock a GPU and CPU on a laptop.

Yes, we know, some laptop have ultra cheap cooling solution that can barely cool off the system in the first place (many HP consumer grade systems just to name a famous example), but not all laptops are like this.

 

I have overclocked my old laptop GPU nearly doubling clock speeds, and would my CPU if I could as well. The cooling solution perfectly handled the extra heat. At the end of the day, as long as the processor is under 100C it is all good. Yes it will reduce the life span of the system, especially if you set your overclocks to be always set to be, but if you don't plan in keeping your system passed 8 years, who cares? After 5 years it will most likely collect dust, or given to someone who just web surf on the system for free. So I don't get it, in that front.

 

 

All I can think about, is overclocks are hard to detect, so when the GPU is faulty because of it and you send it to the manufacture to repair as "your GPU is faulty and just broke", it makes Nvidia loose money as they need to replace the GPU under its warranty with manufactures. There is nothing Nvidia can do. Manufacture would probably need to X-ray each GPU and be a professional to detect over current being passed, assuming that is even detectable. Juts having an employee checking this, would probably cost more than the GPU manufacturing cost.

 

Fine. But I don't see Nvidia having a common production problem where they can't deliver GPUs to sale. I don't see failure of system due to overclock to really be a big problem (people lying and saying they didn't overclock but did). And lastly nor that Nvidia is an particular financial trouble where they need to start money pinching.
