"Fibrance" for lighting your PC

armaneo

I saw a couple articles today about a new Kickstarter project using Corning's Fibrance technology for headphones.  Corning's website shows it being used in other applications, as well.  I think this is going to be a really cool way to light up your case.  Bright, but solid, consistent light in lots of colors.

Don't let Razer know about this

They overdo shit like crazy. Their keyboards and mice alone are eyesores due to the overkill lighting.

Subtlety will be key.  One thing I don't like about my LEDs (see below) is that you can see each individual light source, rather than a solid beam of light.

That's not their only problem lol, shiny plastics and overall tacky design is definitely a contributing factor as well.

Yeah, LEDs look bad in narrow strips like these. they might have to to traditional sealed gas tubes.

I don't think these things are bright enough to illuminate your whole case.

I mean, it doesn't seem like they produce their own light, so you're relying on one single light source at the end of the fibre to illuminate the whole thread.

Although, just chuck on a bright enough source and you'd have no problems :P

Fiberoptic strips + LED source hidden away somewhere is a really old idea, and actually works amazingly well. For example, a 9" MR-16 light bulb can easily illuminate 50 feet of fiber optic cable thats about .5".

Indeed. Hidden LED Strips can look very good. I have such a thing in my case. Although my Profile pic shows my PC with the side off to show my custom water-loop, it looks great when the side is on.

Video can be seen here: http://youtu.be/wxIb-Qc7AGo?t=1m55s

Sadly the video doesn't show the led brightness or vibrancy very well.

If someone would put in a flexible diffuser then it would be all good.

No doubt, just check the picture of my build in my sig -- other than the LED which is peaking out of the top right corner (which I fixed months ago) -- it looks like a solid strip of light. (I'm no longer running it along the top, so the reflection in the window can no longer be seen.)

You know what might be cool? If your power cables to various components would glow different colors depending on the amount of power they're drawing.

For instance, your GPU power cables could glow green when you're not gaming, and transition to a deep red when you start gaming.

Get a Superflower Leadex LED PSU, and mod some fiberoptic cables onto the end of the connector and running the length of the wire. The only problem is that the LED doesn't vary by power draw, but close enough.

So its EL wire with wires stuffed inside of it for headphones...?

EL Wire is nothing new

178630760_orig.jpg?226

Was my first thought too, initially. Then again (afaik) no one has really experimented with making thick enough EL wire that you can run cabling through.

Using this tech for headphones and other consumer boutique-level products would just look really gimmicky imo.

Now for custom-braided power cabling in a PC? Provided quality isn't sacrificed, oh hell yes. That's something I'd be after. Even though I'm the only one who sees my PC.
