Skylake to drop USB 2.0 completely, but say goodbye to Windows 7 Installation via USB

Original source in Chinese from expreview, translation by WCCF

http://wccftech.com/intel-skylake-remove-support-usb-based-windows-7-installation-platform-specs/

Long story short, Intel is dropping USB 2.0 ports from all of its Skylake platforms, but USB 3.0/3.1 will no longer require drivers except for advanced device functions. Because of this, you can no longer install Windows 7 via USB, because Windows 7 does not have the code base for the HSCIx protocol which Intel's USB 3 specification during the installation process. This means you can't use your USB mouse and keyboard either. You must have PS/2 devices if you wish to install Windows 7 on the Skylake platforms, and you will have to constantly plug and unplug a PS/2 mouse and keyboard every other screen.

So, if Windows 10 isn't out within the next 5-6 months, you can say hello to windows 8.1 if you want to run a Skylake S platform.

There's also stuff about the new speedstep and other technologies Skylake brings nestled in the article.

Seems to be intel is trying to push USB 3.0 as 2.0 has been out for a while and is fairly bad compared but I don't think it'll completely remove 2.0, legacy support is too important.

As my computer is running Windows 7. Either way, yay, Skylake.

I would get 8.1 in a heartbeat if my internet I'm paying for wasn't 3Mb/s down and averaging 1.5-2Mb/s... Sometime .5Mb/s down.

Obviously you can plug any older USB device into a 3/3.1 port, but the thing about Windows 7 is it can't talk to 3.0 during the installation process, as it has no native support. Without a 2.0 port on the board, you can't talk to Windows 7 via USB, only through PS/2

I find it much faster than windows 7 and with start8, i actually like the start menu even more because it is more customizable.

Don't get me wrong I understand that, and I've never used 8.1, but from what I hear the time it takes to customize the UI to being something pleasant is obnoxious. I'm just going to hold off until Windows 10 to get all the performance gains, DX 12, etc..

There's no point to upgrade. Haswell will be a thing for a while. Unless you looking for a build just now. The performance gains are to minor that it would be worth it to abadon haswell.

8.1 is fantastic (when you are using start8) why would you want to use ancient 7

This is 100% true, most of us that have a recent i5 or i7 will not really be upgrading, and for 90% of the home consumer market I doubt they would even notice, and have no idea what the different is between USB2 and 3 other than 3 is faster etc

I think its a none-issue, very few people are buying Windows 7 etc

The same reason some people still use TN panels: there are still some advantages.
