Kinect For Windows DISCONTINUED

TwistedDictator

“The move to v2 marks the next stage in our journey toward more natural human computing. The new sensor provides a host of new and improved features, including enhanced body tracking, greater depth fidelity, full 1080p high-definition video, new active infrared capabilities, and an expanded field of view,” Microsoft said in a

. “Likewise, SDK 2.0 offers scores of updates and enhancements, not the least of which is the ability to create and publish Kinect-enabled apps in the Windows Store.”

Wait, what is the point of Kinect for Windows? To control your mouse with your dick or something?

I've never even heard of Kinect for Windows.

And neither did I. But I guess it's true. And PS, your avatar is broken.

It was used as an early camera for the Oculus rift to help with tracking and VR games. Give them a bit more depth and interactivity

I've never even heard of Kinect for Windows.

People have used Kinect for windows for many different things. Typically for gestures instead of a mouse and keyboard.

Some examples of Kinect for windows actually being used.

1. A hospital that was using it for gesturing during surgery to control 3D models on a screen of the person who was having surgery done.

2. 3D rendering of real objects. Kinect records what it is looking at in all angles and you then have a 3D model of the object on a PC.

3. A man in a wheel chair who cant talk, and is almost fully paralyzed used the Kinect to track his eyes to allow him to use a program to communicate for him. He would look at words or letters on a screen and the program would create a sentence and talk for him or something like that.

4. I've seen a man use the Kinect to control parts of windows such as turning off the monitor screen when he steps away from his computer and the Kinect cant see him any longer. So he comes back and the monitor turns back on.

5. Also using gesture to scroll or bring up menus or switch apps. What ever you can think of.

6. A KICKBUTT webcam and mic.

this dick controll sounds great for figurering out what porn to watch... just let the dick decide xD

but this kinda sucks cause the kinect was actualy pretty good at taking a 3d image of something and then making a model of it to 3d print it out... be great if i wanted to 3d print say my dick and give it to someone....

Kinect for windows is a great 3d scanner of environments such as a bedroom or for 3d printing objects. I believe someone used a Kinect to scan their apartment for the Oculus Rift.

As others have already pointed out, it has great possibilities and a vast amount of uses in the medical industry.

I'm more inclined to ask "What's the point of Kinect for Xbox?".

There are so many more uses for it on Windows that has nothing to do with gaming that it absolutely baffles me as to why Microsoft is still pushing for Kinect for Xbox and not for Windows.

I was agreeing with you. When I wrote "A lot of devs use it for creating gaming. I never had to face palm at so much at comments ive seen today." was for the other noobs.

For example cheap motion capture animation? Mo-cap equipment ain't cheap, but Kinects are a more affordable option (though you might need 2 - 3 Kinects for best results). Quality might not be the best possible but for some it's enough.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

What a shame.

Kinect may have failed on potatoboxes, but it's a pretty good 3d-scanner/webcam...etc. for PC Master Race.

Anyone who does not have a sister hates the fact that Kasugano Sora isn't his sister.
I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...

If only we could get rid of all products that "don't do anything" for anybody who feels that way regardless of what it actually does in reality. Case in TheCMan's post.

They should make Kinect SDK available for Linux.
