Don't get suckered into upgrading things every year unless you're Obama and can print money. For instance, I like Toms Hardware's suggestion of never buying a CPU less than three tiers above the one you're using right now.

Don't buy the OS from the vendor, "Find an old CD somewhere around your house from another PC"; save ~100$.

-Don't cheap out on a PSU, I usually recommend a quality 600W or more, as it gives you nice overclocking headroom, and peace of mind.  Don't judge me.

-More cores =/= more performance

-Do your wiring job right the first time, keep it tidy

-Check your temps always

-Pick a fast HDD, if you're on a budget skimp out on the SSD now and get it later

-Your BIOS, CTRL+S, and Google are your friends.

-Always ground yourself before touching your components.

-Before purchasing, have a tech-savvy friend check over your parts list, put it up on a tech forum, do something.  If you're new, never buy parts blindly.

-Don't buy those stupid "FTW", "SSC" GPUs unless they're your only choice; it has no benefit that can't be equalized by a good overclock

-Don't buy too much VRAM if the card itself can't drive it

-Never be afraid to ask any questions, no matter how stupid it may seem.  Those you ask are almost always willing to help, and it's better than not asking and screwing yourself over.

Do not buy a cheap chinese unbranded PSU and jeapardize your entire system as a result. (Cheap case/PSU bundles are notoriously likely to include such an item)

Always ensure to buy a quality unit from a known OEM, look for one that's 80+ certified and if you're not sure if it's a good unit just ask the forum.

Who are you???

I would say: Don't cheap out on your case. :D

Case would be the least of my concerns, I can deal with a cheap shitty case but where I would advise people is the PSU, always get a decent make which is far more important.

Hdmi can give black bars on your display like it isn't scaled to your panel.

Google hdmi scaling for either nvidia or amd for a fix. I'd put it here but enhancing your google-fu research ability is also a good skill to learn.

And Windows mouse accel yeah - Windows calls it enhance pointer precision.. what an opposite!!

That alt+f4 does, in fact, enable God mode for all games. The naysayers just don't want the newbies to get in on the fun.

I'd go back in time and tell people about Vista and Windows 8 before it was too late.  For now-a-days; "Beware cable companies, they don't want net neutrality for a reason, and that reason is because it keeps them from ripping you off of more of your money."  8)

It never boots up fine the first time. And that's okay. It's probably not broken, you've just forgotten something. Like the power switch on the PSU or the CPU 8 pin.
Also, make sure to get a good motherboard, it's more expensive, but it'll be one of the longest lasting components in your PC, so make sure it's at least a decent one.
