They wouldn't. It makes more sense to kill iPhone 6S, iPod Touch and even the regular iPad.

The stone cannot know why the chisel cleaves it; the iron cannot know why the fire scorches it. When thy life is cleft and scorched, when death and despair leap at thee, beat not thy breast and curse thy evil fate, but thank the Builder for the trials that shape thee.

This totally makes sense.

  • They do have a 5.5 inch iPhone which should satisfy those who need a smaller iPad. Smaller tablets existed in the first place for portability as well as for the screen real estate which I think is mostly solved by a phablets these days
  • Its pretty obvious that Apple doesn't have much interest in the mini which was clearly evident by the very nominal iPad mini 3 upgrade when they could've easily made it thinner and put in a A8 chip. They really want to differentiate between a product they care and a product that they don't care much about. It only existed because of popular demand

The iPad Air 2 is pretty thin, light and portable too and could easily replace the mini IMO. And with the kinds of internal upgrades it got this year, I'm pretty sure they're cooking up some great exclusive features for the iPad

I have a first gen iPad and all I ever really use it for is watching youtube :P It crashes if I try to do much else on it. I personally don't really care too much for the iPad mini (too small for me), but I know most people really love having an iPad mini, can't imagine they would cancel it to be honest.

Stop suggesting the iPhone 6 Plus as a replacement. You would pay 350$ more (iPad Mini is 400$ so that's almost 2x) for useless features and a smaller screen... And the previous version still being sold which is another 100$ less.

If they remove it, it's not because they're considering the 6 Plus as a replacement.

Well, not all the features are useless, although I do agree that there's no way an iPhone is a replacement. A phone is a phone, and it won't run iPad apps or tablet versions of most iPhone apps.

Maybe they could disable the LTE chip making it wifi only and tweaking the OS so it runs iPad apps like it should. That would mean cutting the price quite a bit reducing the margin a lot. Not very Apple like.
