Cheaping out on everything to fit a GTX 980 will ofcourse result in bottlenecks, it's called imbalance. You need to either expand your budget to fit an I5-4690k/Xeon E3 1231v3 or take the 970 instead

OP go with a core i5-4460 and H97 motherboard if you can't afford a good CPU

idealy you should look for core i5-4690K + Z97 motherboard.

 

The athlon bottleneck even a GTX760 in many games.

A lot of people consider cpu bottleneck to be akin to plague around here.

 

As long as CPU can send out 144fps or however many your monitor can display in the games you play, it will be fine.

 

You can use the extra GPU horsepower to turn up game settings + downsampling + ENB.

why go 970 when can afford 980?? i saw 980 got 10-15 more frames in almost all games in benchmark on linus's video . both have 4gb vram

Your CPU could have done only so many instructions per second,........ to manage all those 1&0s per second called CPU/MEM/GPU/DISK/OS <--all this in 1s&0s.. Holysnaffoooooo Mr.CPU

You need a faster CPU to manage better Minimum/Average/Maximum FPS.

At 4.7Ghz + the Athlon x4 860k will not bottleneck a 980Ti, its been proven and people use bottleneck for slight FPS loss like -2 to -5 fps

are you using the 860k and the 980 now? if so how is it running? i have a 860k and a 970 but want to upgrade to 980
