If you're chicken pecking, then it'd be helpful to move to touch typing. Though I've heard chicken peckers can get impressive results (like 100+ WPM). I'm sure there are plenty of websites or what not that teach touch typing for free.

 

If you are touch typing, then the only way to improve is to practice. I learned to touch type in 5th grade and I've been writing in various forms since.

Yeah, people really measure it. That is a site you can use to test, there's a lot more. My aunt can do ~110 WPM

So lately I've been practicing typing a lot on my new Logitech G710+ (with cherry mx browns) and I've been able to achieve an average of 83 WPM with 97% accuracy on keyhero.com. I've found information online about people having typing speeds around the 50s and average typists having speeds of 80 WPM. So I'm wondering if this is untrue because how can people who type for 6 hours a day have a lower speed than me if I only practice typing for 20 minutes a day. Can whoever is reading this do a quick typing test at: https://www.keyhero.com/free-typing-test/ and comment their score. I'd highly appreciate it.

They don't practice they just type. People in the court room have insane speeds and accuracy though

I usually get around 90WPM, but if I go faster my accuracy will go down a decent amount.

Based on my typing class at school most people have about a 30 WPM and about 50 WPM on the higher side of things. I personally score a ~50 WPM with ~95% accuracy. On the site itself it shows a average of 35 WPM and 91% accuracy.

Well most people don't learn to type the proper way. They just type to just use a computer and they just don't care about typing fast. From the people that I've seen, they type around 30-50wpm.

I could, but it wouldn't be an accurate representation of my 70-90WPM that I type when formulating my own thoughts compared to the abysmal 40-50WPM I get when doing a synthetic typing test. It's like bench marking computer hardware, but inversely opposite when comparing synthetic tests with real-world performance.

With enough Redbull/Monster/artificial energy, I can type accurately at around 120-130 WPM. This is on my shitty $10 Logitech keyboard at work; for some reason I type much slower on my keyboard at home which uses MX Browns.

For me it depends. On a good day I can keep it between 110 and 120 WPM  sustained (tested regularly) on a QWERTY keyboard. On a good number pad, I can type significantly faster (I'm not sure of actual speed, but I can enter about 2 3 digit numbers + the enter key per second.)

EDIT: On second analysis, even though by sound and eyesight my typing on a number pad is significantly faster, 2 3 digit numbers per second is equivalent to 120 numbers per minute, so I guess my typing speed is comparable across both types.

I do roughly 75 depending on if I’m ‘warmed up’ on TypeRacer. I’m hoping to hit 100wpm. I just got a K70 LUX with blues that it hate though, I feel like the keyboard is forcing mistakes . Considering selling it to a friend and going with Browns, or even Reds

I've been bouncing between 65-70 with 98-99.5% accuracy on a G810.  32 years old.  Never learned how to type properly.  I still look at the keyboard most times, even though I really shouldn't need to at this point.

 

It's hilarious and almost to the point of sad watching my boss type. Two fingers, hunched over, staring down at the keyboard.

Ever since I started typing at a young age I was always using 2 fingers. Even as I went through school, I found it difficult to unlearn and relearn typing again, because around 5th grade, I was already a decent typist at that age. Is it worth it to try and learn home row now?

if it works for you, then you do you.

 

I wouldnt change anything you do in any aspect without a compelling reason.

 

Do you need to type faster?  more fingers being able to press keys could maybe be faster.

The only advantage with touch typing I see is you can see what you type as you type it. Though I'd imagine with enough time and with the same keyboard, you can achieve something similar with two-fingered typing.

 

But whatever works for you works for you.
