Asetek Granted Patents On Liquid Cooling Systems For GPUs In The USA

Sauces: http://www.eteknix.com/asetek-granted-patents-on-liquid-cooling-systems-for-gpus-in-the-usa/
http://asetek.com/press-room/news/2014/asetek-allowed-us-patent-claims-on-graphics-liquid-cooling-patent.aspx

This is great for people who want to get into water cooling but don't have the time or commitment to build a full water cooled loop. No doubt custom loops look AMAZING, but they do come at a cost. But it is the fact that Asetek is getting involved in this and this is where i am personally being put off. The G10 bracket from NZXT is a great piece of kit but, now we are going to get Water coolers which will mount onto GPUs and cool them. They won't look fancy and they probably wont be expandable. I mean what if you ran multiple cards like a SLi or XFire setup?

I hope that this doesn't force EK and XSPC out. Asetek are getting a bit greedy.

Does it mean anyone trying to make waterblocks for GPU will have to pay Asetek?

No i don'r think so. Asetek are going to try and make AIOs for GPUs which i think is dumb cos a CM Sedion 120M and G10 would have you covered, would probably cost less as-well. Waterblock manufacturers are safe but Asetek will pose their option as a cheaper option compared to getting a waterblock + coolant + tubes + pump.

I like Asetek and all, but this is ridiculous.

I really dont see how this will affect anyone making custom water blocks. I think the article is jumping to conclusions.

Here is the patent http://www.google.com/patents/US8755179

Way to go Asetek, you're punishing the US vendors more than anyone else.

I'll just have to buy any future WB from non-US vendors or eBay.

A patent would block imports into the affected country.

Exactly, it's like this right now with Fractal Design and their new AiO water coolers.

It looks expandable. But if that's the case then why would the user not just get a waterblock and what not.

Exclusive rights to sell in the US, and import ban are two completely different things.

Nonetheless, the patent is going to deter companies that make custom GPU WB from selling in the US.

It makes me very sad.

The patent basically describes a custom waterblock.

An AIO GPU waterblock and possibly expandable? Ain't that basically a custom one?

Top of all, a patent, way to go Asetek, I hope it doesn't happen the same legal problems like Swiftech.

The only thing that would make this worse is if it stopped imports. :(

IDK I just hope they don't patent troll with this. Last thing we need.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Not when VRAM and DRAM needs to be cooled more it won't. You need full coverage water blocks on cards like the 290x as the memory can reach to 90C while using the G10. 90C is probably too hot and when they start manufacturing 3D memory for GPU's they will get hotter. That is what I think anyway.

Passive heatsinks, which cost mere pennies, fully address the issue of memory temps when using the G10. NZXT is trying to keep their product as generic as possible, so they put the burden of finding and buying the correct heatsinks on the consumer. Those heatsinks, combined with the included fan, are more than sufficient to cool all the other components on the PCB.

I don't see why you're worried about ek / xspc getting "forced out"  EK has a GIANT portion of the liquid cooling market, that market % won't just disappear IMO

Everyone in this business, save maybe EK and Bitspower, are small brands who can't really afford legal fees. Asetek had no real claim against the Swiftech H220/H320 and notice how they never went after CoolIT who makes AIOs like the Corsair H100. What they did was file a complaint against the smaller Swiftech knowing they would be able to stop or delay shipments. But now that Cooler Master (who fought back legally and have the money for it) introduced the Glacier series, Asetek knew to not do anything.

I have been talking to Hank from PPC and Bryan from Swiftech, both know this has a good chance of raising prices at the very minimum.

Would you recommend buying some water cooling parts now? Or it would be wise to wait anyways depending on the news?

Well yea but you have to source your own heatsinks and they aren't cheap if you want good ones. If the G10 had been designed in such away that it cools the VRAM memory chips better you wouldn't need heatsinks. There should be 2 fans on the G10 not just one and they should be larger like 120mm and they should be positioned just over the memory chips so if you want you can stick some heatsinks onto the chips. But that would be for a revision two I would imagine. They did do a really good job though I just wish they did some more compatibility tests with some more obscure graphics cards like mine for example.
