Canadian Teens Discovered Security Exploit in ATM

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/06/12/kids_hack_canuck_bank_atm_during_lunch_break/

Two Canadian kids have made a mockery of bank security by hacking into an automatic teller machine during a break between classes.

The 14 year old duo Caleb Turon and Matthew Hewlett broke into a Bank of Montreal ATM during school lunch by following an online manual for accessing the machine's administrator functions.

FIrst of all, the bank must have been stupid to not change any of the default passwords. To make matters worse all of the information about the ATM was published online. The manual included instructions on how to access an administrative menu on the machine.

Also, these kids did the right thing. They went to the local branch office to let them know. Although, only after the bank required proof.

If it was me, I don't know if I would have done the right thing...

The bank is still responsible too. They should have used some remote monitoring system which tracks each transaction made in less 30 minutes or so.

@Askew, I would have abused it too brotha.

People have been doing this since they've released the small ones (6+ years ago) they put in bars and corner stores, they run NT so of course their security's dog shit.

This is easily disabled once you get into NT also those monitoring systems leave a massive backdoor into the ATM so you can just spit hundreds of dollars onto the street.

Limit the amount of money withdrawn if your anxious.

I was amazed, your cash withdrawal in CA was $75 max per ATM.

If it is a 3rd party ATM it varies by vendor.

If I use my bank's ATM I can withdraw up to $1000

As tempting as it is, I wouldn't have done something shady. I've been in situations where my lifestyle was really comfortable and i've also been in situations of homelessness because things went south. This isn't my money. To take someone else's money is being a petty human being. These teens did the right thing.

Wow, though. You'd think bank security would be a lot more secure.

Well I am part of a credit union, so maybe that's it? I can't find an exact number on their webpage...but I know it's over a $1000. I just withdrew that exact amount a couple weeks ago.

What bank leaves vulnerabilities like that open?  How hard would it be to program all the software interrupts into keys that can only be accessed from inside the machine and not from the client user terminal?

Hmmm, strange, i also have a credit Union back account and its still $500 Max a day. Not syaing it's not possible, just never have seen any bank ever let you withdrew more then $500 a day out of a ATM a day.

If you google it and read pretty much every bank in america has a $500 and lower MAX withdrew from a ATM.

Example- http://www.unitedcreditunion.com/disclosures.html This credit union bank only allows you to take $300.00 out of the ATM a day. I could give a list of all the credit unions I have looked up so far,but i just chose this one becuase it was the lowest, every other credit Union or bank i look up has the same policy of a $500 MAX withdrew from an ATM, I actually think its a federal law to limit the ATMs that way, for personal and security reasons.

Either way, if you can really do that with your bank, that's pretty freaking sweet :D, and very lucky.
