[Poll] Organ Donation

Hello fellow LTT'lers,

In germany there are some big discussions about organ donations and i'd like to hear your thoughts and opinions about it too.

I don't know how it is in the US or wherever you come from, but here you can get an "organ donation pass", which is a piece of paper you sign and it says

like "I want to donate organs in case i die". You put that in your wallet and when you die people find that and you automatically donate your stuff.

So basically the situation is:

You die and have perfectly functioning organs, what do you want people to do with them?

My opinion:

If i die, i don't need any of my organs but they might help someone else (maybe even a young kid with all it's life lying before him) to live again.

So doctors can just have anything of me they want when they know for certain that i won't make it to the living again by any chance.

I would give my organs up it's not like I will be needing them when I am dead so I might as well give them to someone who does need them.

The only thing that bothers me about this is the concept of waking up while they are operating on you to get your organs. 

You'd be surprised how many people they think are dead, but they really aren't. I'm still looking for something less slanted or sensationalist, but this will do for now.

I'm all for saving people (If you are an anime person, watch Angel Beats. Great stuff on this topic in that anime.), but I don't trust humans to make that kind of judgement for me when I'm incapacitated.

Here's a less slanted/opinionated view on it (imo at least).

I'd like to be able to pick who gets my organs, and have a doctor I know that'll make sure I'm actually dead lol.

To be honest, the organ donor list should be changed to an opt out system, instead of an opt in system, because of the shortage of organs is extremely high, especially for organs like the heart.

To be honest, the organ donor list should be changed to an opt out system, instead of an opt in system, because of the shortage of organs is extremely high, especially for organs like the heart.

That is actually a pretty good idea. I would be in favour of a system like that.

I can understand that part with the personal doc but how would you pick specific people? i mean, you are dead by then! :D

Its not like you can say before you die "Yeah, i want my brother to get my kidney when i die" because your brother probably won't need it.

I think you are referring to a coma or a plant like life. I don't think they would take your organs in this case. 

I would give my organs away when I die but so far I haven't put myself on a list to do so or have such a card to which the first guy is referring. And down heren (Belgium) I think you are not a donor by law unless you are written on a list.

There's actually a book by Daniel Pennac where a guy has no control over his body as a result of being shot in the head and can feel one of the doctors (who thinks the patient is in irreversible coma) taking his kidney and other organs off for transplants. Then when he eventually "wakes up" he has to go through extensive transplants to get them back...

I'm for it, but I see what could be an issue.

There have been stories about people waking up even 4 hours (it might have been more) after they were considered dead.

Its not like you can say before you die "Yeah, i want my brother to get my kidney when i die" because your brother probably won't need it.

I'd probably have a list of people who actually need it like a check list of people who'd get my organ first if they need it, after everyone's been checked off then it can be sent to whoever(you'll never know).

I was listening to Deus Ex HR's OST when i saw this.........

Anyhow if i had perfect organs i don't see why not, the chases of waking up with half of my organs taken is small, very small.

In the u.s, when you get your drivers lisence you get the option to be a donor or not. If you are a donor, then a little heart is shown in the licence itself.

Sure, I've signed my card long ago. What do I care, I'm dead anyway. If I can end up saving some kid who was born with defective organs or something, then I will have at least done something good with my life, even if it was after my death.

Anything else is not even an option...I get to help 30+ people when I die...whats to think about?

 

Im even willing to take the remote chance that I might have been able to survive...(The article about waking up)....This is rather rare, but the amounts of people that you save for sure is on the other hand very consistant.

 

Everybody who says no to organ donation should never be allowed to receive any organs when they then need them.
