you just dodged a bullet my man.

Yes I'm very aware of this.

I was quite upset to begin with, I was fuming asus told me the warranty was void due to physical damage, not just did their product fail, it could have caused a fire putting my home and family at risk. I fired off an email explaining that the physical damage was caused by their PSU failing and not the other way around, and if they won't honor their warranties then I won't be buying asus products again, and that they might want to take a look at the value of all the registered products I have with them.

I got a call the next day saying that they have decided to give me a replacement, the rep on the phone informed me it was common practice for asus to deny claims on the first try, make of this what you will.

Ooof - out of curiosity which GPUs were connected to these three cables? (and I've added the above to my wall of Fame Shame Flame)

Its an Asus strix 1000w, it was only running two 4070ti's at 50% power in an open air system, one dedicated pcie cable going to one of each the cards and the 3rd cable went to the last connector on each of the cards, so about 300w total over 3 pcie cables.

I think it's ridiculous that it would heat up so much from such a low power draw, and that no protection was triggered.

Bit odd but I will take it. The Noon time numbers and WU's.

Still rocking the 1080 (non-Ti) 😉

Yeah its kinda insane given I've ran so many cards, including the 2080 and now 4070 Ti from a single cable with two plugs.  Though granted that one its not a modular PSU.

When I switched to modular initially I did only use a single cable, then moved to double cables "to be on the safe side".  But apparently not as safe as you'd expect, considering each plug (at the PSU end) should be able to handle 300W, so what happened to yours should have been impossible.

Its only two plugs at the PSU for a 4090, though mine only draws double the power of the 4070 Ti when folding (so the Tis are slightly more efficient PPD except its offset for me by being in individual PCs).

Speaking of, its sure going to be interesting to see how the event ranks go as the teams top 10 are hard to reach due to how many points ahead they are, so the events scores are far more interesting.

I would not be surprised if we make a big dent with catching up to the curecoin team. We are currently producing double what they are, with a rate to catch up in about 7 months (according to eoc) we may take that down 5 or 4 months moving us into 3rd place by May. 👍

If only we could get at least half the register team on board we would smash curecoin and start moving in on the default team. Bano is going to be in first place in 3yrs (according to eoc)

A 4070ti has a TDP of 285W and while each 8-pin PCI Express PEG Connector is rated at 150W, running both cards at 50% this should not have been an issue even assuming neither card used a significant amount of the 75W available from the PCIe slot itself (Most modern cards apparently don't).

I suspect there was a physical problem with the fit on the PSU or Cable's connector at the PSU end on one or more of the connectors/cables.

Can you tell if the wire on the Cable is 16 or 18AWG? (It should be 16)?

Can you tell if the wire on the Cable is 16 or 18AWG? (It should be 16)?

Further to that, I've never seen a WU go over about 220W on the 4070 Ti, I even accidentally left one of mine limited to 220W (I had scripted that to be set when the display manager starts when I had the 3080 in this PC) and it scored identical to the one that had no limit applied.

The 4090 is only pulling about 310W peak, though that has the benefit of the voltage curve optimiser which AFAIK you can't do on Linux.  Although as mentioned when these cards came out, they get insanely efficient if you limit the clock rate to around 2500-2600Mhz, or if using curve optimiser tweak the power limit down until you are hitting the best clock rate before the voltage has to increase.

220W 4090 vs 300W (unlimited) vs 220W 4070 Ti:

The PSU side is always a bit sketchy, given they appear to use the same connectors as PCIe power but pushing double the current.  So either PSU manufacturers are using higher quality connectors, or they are leaving no safety margin.

I gotta admit, Curecoin looked tempting but it seemed complicated.  It just would be nice to have something to offset the cost of Folding a bit more, especially now electricity prices have shot up.  I've already effectively replaced all my GPUs with more efficient models so worst case I can fold less and still achieve more work done.  I mean the winter electricity bill LAST YEAR for the three months including the folding event was about the price of a 4090!

Same for the 1080, but my numbers at noon were only slightly higher than normal  😕

This 1080 is a workhorse for the games I normally play (Forza Horizon and Motorsport, The Division, constantly going back to the first Borderlands).

The only reason I'm considering an upgrade is for Starfield, but I'm already at 80 hours playing on 1440p low settings.

I have had a close look and the connectors and they appear to be seated fully, as they are melted in situ I assume they have not moved from handling the psu.

I can confirm that the wires are 18awg as that is what is printed on the cables.

So, anyone building some sTR5 systems? If you're lucky, they might ship in time to still get them on the event 🙂

I had a 1080 that I was attempting to bring back from the dead, and if it worked I was going to get a cheap EPYC combo, but the 1080 only got to "less dead". nvflash worked and it started reporting more specs in gpu-z (wrong specs, but more specs) and tried running a folding instance with it, but it could not go reliably. Might be having a roommate heat their room with a system though so bonus points?

I've been super busy at work over the past couple weeks, so I haven't had time to get anything else going yet. I think I'm just going to stick with the cards I already have up and running for now, and I might add some more later during Folding Month.

Folding month lets goooooo!

Got 6x 4090's (courtesy of a Comino Grando!) and a 7900 XTX running so far.

i always wonder about the sound those Comino boxes generate. Seeing they use just a single 360mm radiator.
I have a single 360 aswell, and it's a fatter one than the Comino boxes use, but with a 64 core EPYC, 2 4070Ti's and a 3090 i still have to crank the fans up pretty loud when everything is going full bore. Eventough that is nowhere near the powerdraw 5 4090's do!
