Google Echo? Apple Nest? Amazon Homepod? No problem for Matter!

Matter 1.0, a new smart home standard, was finally released by CSA (Connectivity Standards Alliance). This new smart home standard allows interoperabillity between different eco systems, such as the ones from Google, Apple and Amazon, which are all members of the alliance. Matter's goals are to simplify the IOT and smart home space by making it easier to adopt new devices, make sure that they work and on top is supposed to increase security by enabling devices to work entirely on private networks without being connected to the internet.

 

Devices that feature support for this new standard will have the matter logo printed on the box.

 

With the release of Matter 1.0 companies will now be able to get their devices certified for the new standard and afterwards push updates to already existing devices to support it.

My thoughts

I personally enjoy the idea of being able to adopt a Amazon or Apple device to Google Home and simply know that these devices will work seemlessly with Google Assistant, even tho they might not offer the full feature set, as I'm sure I won't be able to ask my Google Home Max questions with "Hey Siri". On top of that being able to adopt a Phillips Hue device without having to install the Phillips Hue app is great, as long as Phillips will certify their devices. But considering that IKEA and Lutron are also part of the alliance, I don't think they will miss out on it.

Standards are good but the reason I haven’t gone near IOT is it’s a security nightmare.  Some of the mentioned products may even be considered malware all by themselves.  Does this standard address that at all?

I guess a standard is nice and all, but I already use a single app that combines my multiple different brands of smart devices/ecosystems. The offline aspect will be nice though.

likely not, but I guess it could ease it up, but easier connect it to it's own network/ecosystem? then again you still are likely wanting to access it with you phone, or if needing to use 100 apps. On a device that already has it's own security risks and how much value is in your phone. From ID's, cash, 2FA and a lot more.

 

*creates a 2 phase OS system for phone* simple and cheap performance, only accessing for these basic lower level connections in it's own ecosystem like dedicated hardware/storage or in short could use a sim card for smart house with modifications to it. jk

The biggest benefit of HomeKit was Thread routers which keep your home network secure from potentially rouge HomeKit devices on your local network, and HomeKit integration on your router lets you control the security of your network in a way that I'm not sure other smart home technologies do. I know Matter is not replacing HomeKit, but its cool to see standards being adopted that will work with it.

I think they both have serious problems. IOT was more or less born broken, I’m not sure social networks were.  IOT might possibly be fixed with a standards system. Only might.

nah, gives corporations more access to consumers private lives. It was bad from inception, it will remain bad even with a standard set to help corporations more than the people installing this devices in their homes.

Mmmmmaybe.  That “real names only” thing totally had to not be allowed though.  As well as what it was legal to save, not save, and process.  Putting the genie back in the bottle isn’t possible I think.  At least for those already datamined.  Those shopping “loyalty” cards btw? Their primary purpose is also datamining. They know what and where you bought something as well as how much you paid.  To the foot, second, and penny.  You can do a lot with that.  The first company to use one was a British grocery store.  They used it to predict a customer’s menstrual cycle so they could remind her to buy pads.  She sued them and won.  So now they still collect the data, they just don’t tell you.

Maybe if laws were in place for like 70 years or something and the people that got datamined all died.

Then instead of fining they should have all of their activities ceased, you know the same way when someone commits a crime they get thrown to jail and lose out on years of life. Make it penal to datamine, arrest those who keep doing regardless, since in the eyes of the law, in most jurisdictions at least, a company is a physical being, "arrest" the company by not letting them operate in the country for X years, no fines, no bail, no give up the profit you've gathered through this illegal practice. They try to go around the law by changing name, increase their time in jail, they try to change people directing the ship, increase their time in jail.

This is already in place and has been for years in the US.  The problem is enforcement.  Usually law enforcement winds up having to settle, because there isn’t enough budget to prosecute.   Worse, All it takes to delay a trial is money,  so they delay them until a more “amenable” administration comes to power that is willing to sweep it under the rug.  Like trump did.  And Busch “junior”, and Busch “senior” and Regan, and probably Nixon and Eisenhower for all I know.  This was particularly evident during the Clinton administration.  A bunch of companies delayed until Clinton’s second term, hoping for a Republican administration.  When he won re-election they settled.  This is why the government is so annoyed by Trump’s special master thing.  It would delay things for years.  Past the next election.  Which is probably the whole point.

They still have to walk to the door, unbox it, then set the thing up though. and the setup is frequently a hair pulling affair. 
 

 Statistics agree with you on the fat and lazy thing though.  Also our fertility went through the floor.

I feel like there is a lot of off-topic "I don't like IoT" talk in this thread and not enough talk about Matter.

 

I think this is fantastic. IoT "eco-systems" need to become more open and interoperable in order to get more mainstream. Let's hope this gets adopted by a lot of companies, and quickly. It seems like some older devices will get updated to support it which is very nice.

No this is an API to allow the data to be shared between all these companies under the radar.
