After this event, gonna see how the repasted 480 runs. Given that it was basically running bareback with how caked the thermal compound was: I'm guessing significantly cooler.

Apparently it had never been serviced in its entire life. Gave it a real good cleaning with some 91% and a medium toothbrush;and then a nice, evenly coated, XTM50 application (was what was available)

 

When I took the cooler off, thermal compound came crumbling out.

Its tricky, as its my understanding dried compound is not always bad as curing compound still exists, its just generally the stuff we buy for DIY is not that type so people tend to assume its bad if its gone hard.

So, I just realised I was being an absolute idiot and using a single p100 to fold when I could have been using 3xT4 s for the same price.

Yeah, we discussed this a lot last year but I don't recall much if any discussion on it this year.

did you atleast play some barry white re apply the thermal paste...

Quick little Friday morning update for my stuff: so far the past few days have been rather calm. I'm now back up to six GPUs folding (RTX 3080, RTX 2070, RX 570 (x2), Quadro M4000, Quadro P4000), and I've also got two CPUs folding (Core i5-2400, Core i7-3615QM). The only machine with stability issues is the machine with the Quadros installed, but I should be able to keep it going until the end of the event. Despite having all of these cards running I've been waking up to a pretty cold house. The GPUs I'm folding with this year are more efficient than the ones I've used in the past, so all of the cards are only drawing around 950W right now (actual readings). I guess my furnace will get some more use this winter...

So yeah, for anyone wondering if they should get a PX1300 from seasonic: only if you don't care about noise or if you're comfortable swapping in a noctua.

The mod is easy enough though.

still though, this is a PSU over 1000 watts so it's aimed at high-end systems, yet anything over 400 watts will result in very annoying and super loud (over 40 dba!) fan noise. what where they thinking? It's not like the fan in there is very high performance model or something, it spins at just 2000 RPM. The Noctua i have in there now is a 1500 RPM model and the difference is night and day. Even if i have it so the Noc spins 24/7.

It had a similar consistency to saltine crackers. And struggled to stay below 75C under load, requiring 5400rpm and a room in the 15-17C range to reach those temps.

Yay, i am at 67th place which should be pretty much the middle of all participants that actually folded this month. So a RTX2080 folding almost 24/7 now is just average.

 

This event really was fun and i will continue to fold at least through the heating season as long as not more of the hardware breaks.

Welllllll..... The newer ones have embedded Ryzen chips instead of Intel atom....
