Labs22 (Sara Dietschy)

I just saw a post on Instagram where Sara Dietschy announced her new line of accessories called Lab22. Last week on the WAN Show Linus announced that LTT Labs will be officially called Lab 32, so will this be too close of a name for it to be problematic? Sara is also in the tech space on YouTube but Lab 32 will be a different thing than merch. Very interesting development!

I'm not really sure I see a problem given how different the actual "product" is. I've never heard of this person until today.

Considering how little their interest/following is, not going to be anything major. Also, Kickstarter...

Always thought it was funny that she claims to be a video/photography expert yet seemingly couldn’t figure out how to set her bitrate properly on her YouTube videos for years on end, resulting in them looking like a smeared mess.

If you can't figure out something as basic as rendering settings, you shouldn't be giving anyone advice on videography. Not to mention trusting her for actual products... She's a basic consumer with very limited knowledge who presents themself as an expert, which she is not.

example of the result of a self claimed video expert not able to figure out bitrate settings:

MacBook Pro 16 i9-9980HK - Radeon Pro 5500m 8GB - 32GB DDR4 - 2TB NVME

iPhone 12 Mini / Sony WH-1000XM4 / Bose Companion 20

There's also static in her audio for the greenscreen shot, around 30 seconds into that video. Sounds like either a bad lav cable or wireless interference to me. That should've been re-shot, or at least looped in post.

Vlogger studios aren't even that big, just use a wired lav or get a pocket-size PCM recorder. You don't need to go all out on wireless mics with digital modes from Shure, Sennheiser, or Lectrosonics. Just get a clean recording for your final cut.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

It's just the rode mic rubbing on her shirt. In my experience digital wireless systems to be rock solid unless you're pushing the range of them.

I learned fairly early on that unless someone is actively monitoring the audio during a shoot then there needs to be contingencies in place in the event that something like this happens.

As long as she doesn't acquire Lab22.com, it should probably be fine.

I just hope no one attacks her or Linus saying they copied one another. Great mind think alike and even though Linus announced his first on the WAN Show as far as I know, that shoplab22 domain was registered 4 months ago according to the WhoIs.

Ehh, not going to knock anyone simply owing to lack of technical knowledge. I recently helped one guy who's been shooting video for years with the bit rate setting on his camcorders. Though, he did most of his shooting during a time when tape was state of the art, and he likely knows a lot more about tape than I do.

Wouldn't matter anyway, the numbers are different. They're also entirely different things.

He already mentioned that there's a company with the same name that actually makes lab equipment.

As for her products, meh. The headphone stand is especially generic.

eh, don't really agree. I know photographers that wouldn't know the first thing about uploading stuff to the internet. They still take superb photos and bank.

She has a YT channel. Clearly has more knowledge than most.

How about a slight addition to the name that still keeps the abbreviation?

Given Linus' description of it on WAN, it seems to be a relatively uncomplicated issue that will end in happy coexistence, unless something goes haywire in the next few days

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)

So that happened... how awkwardly poetic 😅

I actually really do agree with the JPL-style branding, but yeah, obviously the name might need more discussion, given Sara's project.

Sara Dietschy used to have a really good podcast called "That Creative Life". I recommend going back on Apple or Spotify to check out some old episodes, because more often than not it was really good. She stopped doing those podcasts a while back and shifted more to cookie cutter "what's in my tech backpack" content, which, um, isn't nearly as good.

She interviewed Linus for TCL podcast at least once.
