NVIDIA Strikes Back! 512.95 Game Ready drivers restore LHR limitation for RTX 3000s

Summary

Nvidia released a driver update which will restore LHR functionality to RTX 3000 cards. Also new games support

My thoughts

It's only been 2 weeks and it's back. Too late though since miners could just not update and stick to previous driver. I don't expect to see another unlock coming any time soon as long as it ain't broke, also since we're nearing the merge (hopefully August of this year, and not delayed again). By then miners will move on to the next profitable coin to mine and LHR will just be a relic of 2021.

Not only this does nothing to adress the LHR because miners just dont have to update... but this driver still hasn't fixed the most infuriating things people have been complaining about for months so there is literally no incentive to update for most people still... unless you literally don't care or are from the group of people these issues don't affect.

While I agree, the listed issue sound very niche market to me. Or has an easy work around. Shadowplay recording is easily replaceable with Windows built-in Game recording feature.

 

Almost no one has Atmos, and people who have the money of a monitor or TV with HDR that is OK in using, probably has the money to have a GPU that run their games at native resolution.

 

I think these bugs affects you personally, but you are in the minority, and so, low priority. At least the bugs are acknowledged.

 

So, I can't agree with you on that part

Stupid move, miners are just going to stay on the old drivers. The only people that are affected are gamers that mine while the system is idle to recoup some of the cost of their cards, because they want to run the latest drivers for gaming.

Keep in mind Game Ready Drivers are meant to provide best support for latest titles. If anything else is opportunistically rolled in is best considered an extra.

fair enough

 

But it took them from November to February to fix flickering on GSync monitors and now they introduced new ones. It's just frustrating

I actually am glad to see this I had audio drop outs since getting an LG C1 and using eARC, seems it was either a coincidence I updated the NVIDIA driver at a similar time, or just that combination the driver has issues with.

To be fair it drops out once or twice a gaming session, annoying but not the end of the world.  Stupid they aren't fixing it as a priority though.

He posted a quote and put some parts in bold. They are:

 

If you toggle HDR on and off in a game when running at non-native resolution, it might crash.

If you got an RTX 3090 Ti and connect it to an Oculus Rift S or Pimax 8Kx, it might not get detected.

If you have HDR enabled in Windows and try to record using Shadowplay, the footage might be overexposed.

If you got an RTX 30 series graphics card connected to an AV receiver using HDMI 2.1 and play something using Dolby Atomos, the audio might drop out.

 

 

I would hardly call these things wide spread or that "most people" are affected by them.

 

 

 

Anyway, I think the LHR limiter is stupid and should not have been made to begin with. Let people use their graphics cards for whatever they want.

We should shame companies for trying to dictate what I am allowed to use my graphics card for.

Oh damn I didnt think Nvidia would be able to make a fool proof method to prevent miners from bypassing the LHR. It worked the first time so surely it will work again  😐

Mining is dying anyway so like who cares if they let us have unlocked LHR cards. In case you haven't checked crypto ain't doing so hot. A 3090 only makes like $2 a day who in their right mind is mining now? It's honestly time to sell your cards and get some cash back and be ready for the next release.

3060 Ti are the best cards to buy currently, best return on dollars spent by a significant margin with the only down sides being more cards required and a potential lower resell value. Either way 3090's have been a bad buy for mining for a while now.

I actually mine a bit to make up the cost of my 3060. The idea never was that it's not profitable right now, but you mine nevertheless, hodl your ETH payouts and hope its price goes up..... any day now...

Back when ETH was at it's peak, a 3060 payout was actually about $2 worth a day lol. With current energy prices, mining is effectively not sustainable source of income at all

Depends.  I pay 11 cents a day to mine on a 3060 so anything above that is profit.  I'm not getting rich off $8 a day total across my house though (2x3090, 2x3060) but it's mildly entertaining.

 

Really I bought them just to improve my status with EVGA so I have a better shot at the 4000 series.  By my calculations, optimistically in a year I profit a couple hundred bucks off each 3060.  At worst I break even.  But my EVGA status improves either way.

Yeah this isn't the strategy.  There's no point in selling right now because the next generation isn't here yet, and even if it was announced tomorrow it's not going to have general availability for months after that.  The resale price of the 3000 series is going to dip going into the 4000 series launch, then everyone is going to grow a brain and realize "oh shit it's actually pretty hard to get a 4000 series card" + "oh it must be a great time to buy the dip" and then the resale price climbs back up.  It happened with the 2080Ti dropping to like $650 at the low point shortly after the 3080 launched and then it climbed back to $1000 or higher.  Same story with the 1080Ti resale when the 2080 launched.

 

I'm planning on holding out until probably 12 months from now and I'll just take a (projected) 25% price hit off MSRP for my used card based on the trends of the 2000 series.  Welcome to commodity investment strategy 101 lol.
