Virtual kissing in meta will be a thing

I honestly don't understand all the negativity in this thread. Are people just conditioned to react negatively to anything that has the word "meta" or "metaverse" in the title now, without any though going into it?

 

1) This has nothing to do with Facebook/Meta. The researchers just happened to use a Quest 2 as their headset.

 

2) I really doubt this will result in some virtual harassment. I mean, you still need to actually wear this thing explicitly designed to simulate kisses. I'm trying not to victim blame here, but if you put on a headset with a special attachment made to enable virtual kissing or whatever, and then join a game that has that feature, then maybe it is on you if you get some virtual kisses you don't want.

 

3) This is not just for kissing. In fact, KISSING IS NOT MENTIONED ANYWHERE IN THE RESEARCH PAPER OR THE VIDEO. It was just something the OP added. The demo shows things like simulating blood splatter hitting your face, rain, smoking a cigarette, brushing their teeth, the feeling of wind hitting your face, and so on.

 

4) I think this looks freaking cool. I highly recommend people check out the video. They are using highly precise and directional hypersonic transducers to simulate touching on the lips. Why the lips? Because they are the most sensitive part of our face, so it's easier.

I wonder if this and eye tracking inside the headset are accurate/precise enough to use for animation motion tracking. At this rate, Vtubers will probably get that figured out and packaged into a $50 desktop program before Hollywood adopts it.

You're forgetting that people only read titles. Because the titles are the most relevant thing in this day and age as was proven by any YT video in the last few years. /s

The kissing part was the comedy part I added, it definitely will be hacked for something like this. But the technology is a marvel. And the video is brilliant. I hope everyone will watch it.

I'm glad kissing is a thing in VR. Now Zuckerberg can kiss my ass because I'm not planning on living in a cartoon / VR.

Okay but my girlfriend (whom i met in person if I may add) and I are long distance right now for study and work respectively and we cannot see each other in the meantime because of complicated circumstances. Stuff like this would help, though I would agree I wouldn't want this in the hands of a company like Meta.
