1080 ti in 2022

Error 504

i was getting ready to upgrade my gpu, just waiting for the prices to drop some more,

but then i saw this video.

after watching this video, i asked myself, what's the point for me to upgrade now?

i already have 1080ti in sli, and they actually run the software i use just fine, autocad, maya, revit, photoshop.......

fps is still fine in most games. (did he get 70fps in cyberpunk??)

i'm sure there are people out there who need 24gb ddr6x ram, but i mean, most people probably don't need them.

anyways, after watching this video, i'm actually happy to be using 10 series gtx.

i'm glad that now i can spend that money on something else.

You never have to buy anything if you're fine with what you have regardless of the product

yes yes, that's kind of my point.

i got caught up in this whole gpu frenzy, and everybody talks about shortages and scalper prices, and i got worried about being left out / missing out on any "seemingly good" deal that's actually a rip off. i was ready to buy a new card that i didn't actually need, just because more cards are readily available in the stores for a lower-than-crazy price, but still a crazy price.

i'm glad that i came across this video, and i got my senses back.

Same reason I stuck around with my 970m laptop for so long. I was like why do I NEED to upgrade? It's more than fine to model on and do quick test renders of parts and I had the big ol used xeon system at home I could dump final renders on no problem.

Only in 2020 when I got a lucky offer for a dirt cheap upgrade did I do it as worst case I could sell things for double (even before the gpu shortage was a thing) and that was just to replace the desktop with something way more efficient and a bit stronger.

The laptop lasted me 7 years before I finally felt that it could use some more power as the newer software was liking it less and less. Old ones were working just fine as ever tho.

The GPU frenzy is real, but if you play it smart, you can come out ahead or at least not have to pay much for an upgrade. I had a GTX 1080, used it for 3.5 years. Was able to buy a 6700xt at MSRP, so sold my 1080 -- for the same price I paid when I bought it new, due to the frenzy. That means the 6700xt upgrade cost me about $100 total, which was worth it. Then 7 months later, I managed to grab a 3080 at MSRP, and I sold the 6700xt for the same price I bought it (didn't gouge buyer up to the $900 it was selling for used on eBay), so another $200 jump. I went from a 1080 to a 3080 for $300 total, and paying that over 7 months was worth it to me. Plus, I managed to buy a 6900xt FE from AMD and flipped it for very low handling fee to family friend in that time, so total paid for the 3080 was even lower in the end.

in 2018 i bought i7 8700k rog strix z370-e 2 1080TI and SLI bridge.. one died.. lucky me got both refunded and upgraded to two 2080 ti's  in 2020.. otherwise i would still be running 1080ti in SLI.... got a good price on a i9 9900k too.. so that's newer too

unless you have wad of cash to burn on nice to have i wouldn't invest in that.. maybe to a custom build in a year or two and se what's on the market..

chipset gen10 to 11 was a waste... no real gains.. not realy impressed with gen 12 either.. i'll see what on the market then... gen 13 or 14? rtx 5000 series? 😄

ya true, that's a good deal. i could have sold my 1080, but i just loved it so much that i didn't want to part with, but that's my misjudgement.

woo, 2080ti, awesome choice, definitely powerful enough to run anything, and keep you warm on coldest winter days.

i was watching a guy playing war zone with 2080ti, really really awesome.

Id take anything over a 1080ti. Frames arent that great, just dont have the cash to get something nice. All my friends have 3080ti's or better and Im still on this junk.

honestly honestly, for me, i really can't see the difference between high and low fps. as long as it's not so bad that i can see the pixels, then i'm honestly ok with it. that and no annoying stuttering.

i do notice that when i rotate 3d objects in autodesk revit, i do see stuttering, but it's nothing i can't live with.

and after watching so many gameplay videos with ray tracing, i really don't see what the big deal is. i'm happy with my 1080ti, no game so far has really broken it for me, so far.

yes the 30 series have better vram, and of course if i could afford it, i would want something better, but right now, i don't need something better because i just realized that my current 1080ti is doing just fine for me.

I'm running a 1080Ti myself at 1440p. Just finished playing Elden Ring at high settings and, beyond the game's own technical issues, it ran like a goddamned dream.

And according to your signature, you're running it at 1080p.

How in the world are your frames not great?!

Because great is subjective. How a game plays in single player where there isnt a real concern for anything isnt what im after.

So is there much worth playing in VR these days or is porn still the only killer app?

There's still nothing really worth upgrading to from a 1080ti if it makes you feel better. Maybe a $699 3080 but that's about it

Seems worth it, top four gpu's are way better. This old card is already struggling with old games, I'd imagine its gonna be much worse in a few months.

here in canada, gpu prices have certainly dropped quite a bit. and their in-store availability has been incredible. so, i guess good news for you.

im really considering this card, it's priced really well and it's exactly the model i'd want...but i don't know when the next gen cards are coming out and this card might very well sell for 799$ just 3 months from now...😬

on the other hand i have the box and everything my current 1080ti gaming X trio is pristine and could probably fetch 720$CAD online or something locally...

NOW TECH IS GETTING INTERESTING AGAIN!!! YÉÉÉÉÉ

according to stockx.ca ,this card was retail priced at $1,200 ,so it's pretty close to retail right now on newegg (but maybe not original msrp)

gaming z is the oc version, more oc-ed than gaming x. i think it's a good card.

but if i were you, and if i could wait, then i would wait, until june when eth2 starts (it's still scheduled for june), or maybe may, just before june, and i think we will see waves of gpu price drop.

here:

unless something happens between now and ethereum pos, but i would just try and wait it out.

hey, 6800 and 6900 are just as good, and you get more vram, but of course, if dlss and ray tracing is your thing, then maybe the green team.

but i think 16g vram is more useful in the long run. imo

yeah no AMD, definitely ray-tracing priority it's the future we are already seeing it i play a lot of new titles and there are always stuff i can't turn on and i can't use the Ai supersampling thingy they have going on...and the games no longer look as nice IMHO in normal rasterization i think many devs are cutting corner now since the games are getting rendered in ray-traced reflections and shadows so why bother making it look supreme nice for the 1080ti you know what i mean...they make it look ''OKAY'' in rasterization and GORGEOUS in ray-tracing...

Also, AMD in canada right now just as expensive as nvidia for the same level of rasterize performance, but you get better ray-tracing and drivers with nvidia...at least when it comes to ''game launch'' drivers and since i tend to download and play my games in the month after they come out (not 12 months later) then nvidia is best they are more on point IMHO.

For me to go AMD it would have to be much cheaper than nvidia like it used to be...say i could get the top dog AMD card for the price of a basic RTX 3080 then i might consider it but other than that no...and VR it's even worse the support is ALL on nvidia the studios ALL use nvidia provided assets, techniques and technologies to produce and test the content...
