Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen reportedly filed two new complaints with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) arguing the tech giant misled investors about its efforts to mitigate the spread of misinformation on climate change and COVID-19.

The allegations build on Haugen’s broader efforts to raise the alarm about her former employer through SEC complaints. The first round of complaints against Facebook were filed in October.

The new complaints were filed by Whistleblower Aid, a nonprofit representing Haugen, this month, The Washington Post reported.

The complaints allege Facebook, now under its parent company Meta, made “material misrepresentations and omissions in statements to investors” about efforts to combat misinformation, the Post reported, citing redacted copies of the documents.

My thoughts

My god is there not a day when Facebook is in the news in a Bad way.

This is exactly what you get when you have Multi-billion Dollar companies, not dealing properly with

- Misinformation

- scams "Fake covid cures"

- fake news

In my opinion the government should crack down hard on Facebook, and scrutinize every single thing Facebook does/wants to do.

You'd have to be a pretty dumb investor if you thought facebook were actually able to do any about fake shit.   I mean seriously, their efforts to make it a little more trustworthy/truthful was like watching a politician fact checking the opposition while embezzling a few million from a fund set up to investigate fraud.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

The best way to defeat any extremist thinking is to allow open discussion. Such methodology brought us to many civil liberties today, especially to minorities. To achieve those freedoms and then revert those aspects of society that brought upon change seems moronic to me. If you need to censor a thought with force, it's usually because your position can't be defended rationally. You won't convince everyone, but it as effectively eliminated racism in the western world outside of fringe minority groups with little to no social power. This idea that the western world is inherently racist is only a selling point of various media channels, not that it's a reality. Only as censorship has continued to rise has such extremist thinking been escalated.

You fight misinformation by exposing factual information. You credit it and allow open discussion. The division only results in both parties creating echo chambers for their cognitive dissonance. Just look at the RCMP trampling the native Canadian in the freedom rallies. That was considered "misinformation". You can't trust these sources anymore. Allowing them to censor information is a horrific mistake.

Facebook "fact-checking" isn't even about checking facts and displaying truth, it is about narrative control and telling you what opinions you are allowed to have and what you are not, what 'truths' you have to accept and which ones you should not. The "facts" are intentionally politically one sided opinions and has been admitted so in a court of law.

And this is why you should keep companies private and just do whatever you want... Especially silencing mainstream media that lies all the time and gets no punishment either.

Nah m8

Companies should work hand in hand with the government and never be questioned as they become the only source of truth and reality.

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

Sadly many companies "like twitter" are all to keen on making sure this does not happen, like that feature twitter announced some months ago, of setting it so you and others can only see things you like "Bubble/safe-space", causing mis-information to be even more rampant.

Not to disabuse anyone of their desire to see Facebook/Meta fail, but Haugen isn't an "whistleblower" in the traditional sense. In the States, someone does that become a "whistleblower" to the SEC (or a few other Federal regulation boards) is entitled to a percentage of fines paid by a company, if they are found to be in violation of regulations. The reasons for this are pretty straight forward: make it financially viable for someone to report maleficence since their career will be over.  This doesn't really apply with Government whistleblowers because they have to work hard to survive. (Most don't, thus why so few do.)

A whistleblower at Big Tech doesn't get verified on Twitter, getting followed by big name accounts and a very expensive PR campaign. No, this is known as an "Op". Reason for it is pretty simple. Facebook would love to utterly suppress any speech that doesn't fit their very tiny worldview, but there's consequences every time they've done that. Government rules enforcing it makes it an industry standard, which ends up enforced on everyone, everywhere. It's the horrific overlap of Tech, Big Business and Government, where you don't know where one begins and the other ends.

We've seen actual whistleblowers at Big Tech before. The company does a full court press to ruin their lives, normally fumbles it horribly, then has to pay millions to settle cases. That ain't this situation.

This ^EleventyBillion.

The only way to discourage the violation of human rights, or to prevent horrible atrocities being repeated--is sunlight.  History should make you uncomfortable; that's how you know it is working.  You aren't supposed to want to repeat it.
