I tried Steam Deck and it's AWESOME!

It's my lucky day! Valve let me try the Steam Deck early - And it destroyed my expectations. Just how good is it? Let me explain...

I kind of expected more performance. It definitely wasnt bad but to be honest for 1280x800p Doom did not run that great. I am a fan of the design and software so far.

50% more perf than Aya with the same power isn't enough? You can even choose whether to play at 60 fps or at 30 fps for longer. ._.

I didnt say relative performance? Dips to 20fps at native resolution at medium settings not a great experience whatever the device is, yes you can run dynamic resolution and/or FSR to make it better but still I would have preferred more performance to be more relevant in couple of years.

I expected it to be faster than the Neo because RDNA2 vs Vega and DDR5 but I did NOT expect this much improvement.

Especially because you can get this for 400 dollars.

Also very impressed with how much info Linus managed to get out of the thing in such a short time.

 

I'm sure Anthony is bummed he wasn't there, sounds like a device he would love to use.

was fun to watch and did go through a bit here and there.

While this is not really going to go into the "replacing switch handheld", it's kind of a nice inbetween though but unsure about being that hot for using with games. Although if the "MP" aspect and remote play/splitscreen is becoming more of, maybe this thing could do well in certain areas and *cough* emulations of certain games.

 

also what is with "it runs arch btw", steam OS? ;IU

I didn't ask to go, but still a little bummed I didn't get to. At the end of the day, Linus was the obvious choice for a "you have 1.5 hours to get everything you can out of it" kind of video, especially while keeping it entertaining. I feel like I might have froze up trying to figure out which questions I wanted to answer first in the constraints given. I probably would have spent more time on the software, which would have been a mistake.

Exactly what I've expected so far. The only surprising factor was the noise comparison, where I expected it to be a lot louder as it seemed.

 

I'm still not sure whether I would want to get one, but I could see this as being really great for people that already have a powerful PC, so they can either play their games on the go or stream their games to a TV from a PC, while the Steam Deck is docked. 

 

Not sure if he mentioned it, but does it support 4K 60 over USB C?

Great video and I'm more excited now for this thing. I wasn't aware the etched glass was only on the high end model but ehhh shouldn't be too big of a deal breaker. I just want to be able to do 1080p 144hz+ for CSGO in docked mode as this is the best LAN PC I have seen.

That was before the settings were dialed in. After he set it to medium the lowest I saw it dip was in the 50s.

also resolution change, but for 4K content viewing and browsing etc, that should be okey.

as for gaming, maybe some of the less demanding titles in 30 fps?

 

Else I would not hold my breath for anything else done in 4K, not sure about the CPU performance if used as a "laptop".

Linus really impressed me with this video. Given the time constraints, limited options for digging into the Steam Deck, and not being in the studio, he did an excellent job of diving into the hardware, answering the right questions to the extent possible, and giving solid critiques. It feels like he honestly did everything he could to help his audience make a more informed decision.

 

If any video shows that Linus has still got it, I think it's this one.

felt like it was tech he was excited for something again, instead of trying to sell something or just to cover it somewhat.

As some recent videos just goes into talking instead of showing the product "in action" or less of it than previously?

and also not just another video to be pushed out for the sake of meeting the schedule, that might cut it shorter.

Can't help but wonder, would it be possible to run 3 monitors with the Steam Deck? I'm assuming 2 is possible, and perhaps 3 isn't too farfetched if you turn off the console screen. We haven't really seen the dock yet, but it might reveal more on the matter?

I was impressed with "quad channel" memory until I realized that was probably four half (32-bit) channels. DDR4 vs DDR5 is gonna be a nightmare to compare...

Props to Linus, he seemed very prepared for this, bring his arsenal of tools to test and knows what questions to ask within a short time vis-a-vis other journalist just talking about the specs and showing B-roll. But of course, this is not new to Linus, he seemed really excited for this product. Let's just hope it's not a paper launch.

one thing that people can be annoyed about the price for this device.

Visually being the screen just look smaller on this device, but might just work in practice.

Storage, as that doesn't seem any good storage options currently, if not there is options inside, else having a USB hub as an "desktop" could be something else and what the port on the steam deck can be used for and if they had an option to connect an SSD to the outside in a portable way. Also if the port could be used for external GPU, docked? 😮

What I really think is missing are options that the Xbox Elite Controller provides.  Users shouldn't have to plug in another controller for better traction, so the means to swap triggers, thumbsticks and D-pads would greatly resonate with those wanting to play FPS, Fighting or Racing titles on the platform.

 

As for haptics, Valve could explore adding LoFelt Studio integration to its OS.  This would improve tactile feedback, whilst support interesting opportunities for developers.

Some people wanted OLED, others 1080p panel, others Windows, more battery, more processing power, etc.

 

They could have done that, but it's just further fragmenting the SKUs, adding unnecessary cost. I bet there will be mod kits for it, if it sells well enough.
