So! Many!! Ads!!! (YouTube) - Is there a way to block it when not on your computer?

I've found a few channels I actually like to watch on YouTube (both entertaining and informative) on my Apple TV that obviously has no AdBlock and about a month ago the app was auto-selecting the lowest resolution all the time which was annoying but then an update fixed that and introduced adverts every 5min~10min which is even worse!

I mean sure put adverts on the 'break' if you will but constantly interrupting all videos at any time is infuriating.

Is there a way to block this or at least minimise to an acceptable balance?

Subscription is not an option, if I were to pay I rather pay for 'actual' content providers I suppose…

You could use PiHole on your home network perhaps, though from what I understand this isn't a perfect solution either.

You can set up PiHole or something similar. There isn't something that runs natively on your Apple TV

PiHole works, but is not perfect. You could also use an HTPC instead for media consumption, watch Apple TV, Hulu, YouTube or similar through your browser, and never have to watch an ad again.

I watch Hulu through a PC with Chrome and uBlock Origin, haven't seen an ad in years.

A used office PC would be $100 or less and would suffice.

DNS based adblocking (like everyone suggested here) won't work for YouTube. YouTube has made it significantly harder for users to block ads on DNS level for the last 2 years. Your only option is to either run a modified app, which i am guessing not possible on your situation or pay for premium.

That's it. Next to nothing else will work (unless you get a modified app... On an Apple device, good luck with that, would be a different story if it was Android) and the money you'd invest in a pihole device that may or may not work with Youtube, could get you months of adfree content with the subscription. Even more so if you or your kid is a student and has a student email.

If you had an android TV device, you could use this

Or even sideload Youtube Vanced. Plenty of other apps exist as well.

What I was about to say: just pay for it. You pay either way, either with cash or your time watching ads.

Honestly just get Premium. If you can get the student discount it isn't very expensive, and you don't have to bother with using modified apps.

Really, if you watch any amount of YouTube then Premium is worth it. I've been a subscriber since the YouTube Red days.

as far as I know, DNS level blocking doesnt work (so pihole will not work) on youtube without modiying the app.

on android: download youtube vanced

on desktop chrome: ublock origin

apple devices: not possible since sideloading is not allowed and the browsers dont support extensions.

You also get YouTube Music with it, which is actually pretty decent now. I dropped my Spotify sub, so technically, YouTube Premium isn't even costing me anything in the shake down.

I definitely feel your frustration with Youtube Ads but on the otherhand our time spent watching ads is definitely worth more than $10/month in my opinion.

The money you pay indirectly does support the creators of the videos you're enjoying so much. Though, you also have the option of Floatplane, if the creator is on that platform, to support them directly. Then, you can watch their videos there without ads.

I don't know why everyone is saying Pi-hole works. The ad's are served on the same Google Video CDN edge servers as the videos themselves, so by and large you cant block the edge names/ip's on Pi-hole, or you break the YouTube video playback.

Best solution? Use an India VPN to sign up to YouTube Premium, its  ₹129/mo which is about US $1.70/mo. I think $20/year for a subscription is well acceptable. (You only need VPN to enable the subscription, you dont need to use it after that)

No they are not. They're a platform which allow people provide their own content for others, just like how Linus is doing it with Floatplane.

I have a yt adblock extension on my browser cause i got sick of yt monitizing vids on unmonitized channels that upload old music, if i aint supporting the channel then fuck ads ill block em

But for monitized content creators i tell myself in my mind that ill disable it just to forget that a few moments later

I mostly use my phone so the ads are there but i dont use the app so i just refresh the page and ad gone, on the app the add will keep on persisting, thank god i dont use the app anymore xD

the way they behave with censorship and bans they are a low level publisher with a political policy (like an internet Rupert Murdock) who have managed to avoid the law that makes them legally responsible for what they do. As always the laws are there but if you have the money then you are lawyers above the American law. I guess this is why places like the EU and individual nations or states are making their own laws to curb the censorships they see.

as to the OP I use Adblock plus, ads? wot ads?

and use other platforms like Bitchute, Minds, Gab, Rumble, Parler, and creator websites like Podcast of the Lotus Eaters.
