Monitor for RTX3080TI setup

Hey! I just ordered a pretty powerful pc with a rtx3080ti. Im upgrading from geforce 780ti so it's going to be a pretty big leap for me.

 

Im very hesitant about which monitor I should order. Ive been looking for a 4K monitor with at least 144hz, but the most interesting ones seems to be freesync and only g-sync compatible which Ive heard bad things about. There are a few hdmi 2.1 monitors releasing here in a few months and though maybe I should wait for them because they have true gsync and nvidia reflex (hdmi 2.1 would be cool to test but only does 120hz).

 

So my question here is simply, which monitor would you recommend for me? Thank you in advance 😄

Most monitors are going to be FreeSync, because FreeSync is an open standard, doesn't require special hardware, and doesn't require licensing fees to Nvidia. A G-sync compatible FreeSync monitor is generally going to work flawlessly. Just check the reviews for the particular monitor you're interested in first. Something like issues with G-sync will be called out.

The 3080Ti can't drive anything at 144hz at 4k.

 

I'd recommend UWQHD or SUWQHD personally

Dont bother. Instead have a look at 1440p240, at the size below 32 incher you really cant perceive the pixel at 1440p.

Not true. It may not be able to drive native 4K in AAA titles at 144+ FPS, but with eSports titles or with DLSS giving an assist, you can't make that blanket statement.

At that point might as well get a 1440p monitor.

Wasn't arguing that point one way or another. Personally, I think 4K gaming at a desk is just stupid. 4K is only necessary for big displays, like the 65"+ in your living room. However, that doesn't mean it's not entirely doable with a 3080 Ti, of all things.

4k Ultra you DLSS you might be pushing 144hz in certain esports titles, but I wouldn't even bank on that. I can't find plenty of benchmarks, but for instance Fortnite is ~90fps, or ~130fps with DLSS.

 

Not to mention getting a bit 4k monitor for esports kinda defeats the purpose of "competitive" esports. He'd be way better suited at 1440p if he cares about high refresh rate gaming. That's a no brainer.

Granted, but to say you can't do it at all is just wrong.

No, because there's a difference between saying a card is meant for a particular resolution and frame rate and whether it can achieve that resolution and frame rate. No, it's not an 8K card, and it would be obviously wrong to say it was, but that doesn't mean it *can't* get there.

So because the 3080Ti can maybe run 144hz in a small handful of esports titles at 4k it's "meant to be a 4k 144hz card"?

I use a OLED TV with my 3080 ti. The TV is G-sync compatible and 10 bit, 4k 120hz with the 3080ti. It runs and looks great. 

 

If I was going back to using a monitor I would get an LG 38" 144hz 3840 X 1600 ultrawide.  I already have the 75hz version that is fine for a 2080 ti but the 3080 ti is better able to use the higher refresh rate.

That is not even remotely what I said. I actually said the very opposite if you read. The only contention was you throwing out a blanket statement that the 3080 Ti can't do 4K at 144Hz, and that is just wrong. No matter how you cut it or how many different straw man arguments you try to throw up, it's still wrong.

You chimed in to say the 3080Ti is a 4k144hz card (which it's not). We've clearly established that is may be able to achieve that in certain games, but that doesn't mean it can be labelled as a "4k144hz card".

 

Or did you literally come in here just to start an argument based off the fact that I said it can't drive 4k144hz when in fact it can run esports maybe at 4k144hz. Regardless, my original point still stands.

I... don't really have any reccomendations for specific models as I'm not a high refresh guy. 

Just chiming in to say that if you want a 4K panel, get one. I finally got a monitor upgrade, LG 27UK650-W. Is a 27" 4K60 panel, absolutely gorgeous for games and just general use (far more screen real estate with lower scalings vs smaller resolutions, and with how crisp it is I can read small text incredibly easily). Even if you can't drive the full capabilities of your monitor right now, you tend to keep good monitors for years until they basically stop working, or are so outpaced by current displays that it's worth the upgrade. I can't drive the full refresh of my own monitor without dropping settings/res in some harder to run titles as I have a 2060 Super, but I can push full 4K in my main game (Destiny 2) and for the rest I'll have no issue once I finally upgrade my GPU, which I do a lot more often than switching monitors. 

Basically if you can afford it, get the panel you actually want, don't settle for something you'll just want to replace later. GPUs/game tech (DLSS and the like) will catch up before a quality monitor is worth upgrading. Sorta the "buy nice or buy twice" logic.

If we neglect the cost difference, would a 4K monitor do worse at 1440p than a native 1440 monitor?

 

I wouldnt mind "paying extra" if I could experience 1440p144hz vs 2160p90hz firsthand on the same monitor.

 

If not I think I will get myself a 1440 monitor. I guess I might have overrestimated the power of the computer haha

That's basically summing up what I said. You took a pretty general statement summing up the power of the card, and nitpicked it looking for an argument. I'm done wasting my time.

Yes not using the native resolution results in a less sharp image. So just go for a 1440p display.

Grab either a Samsung Odyssey G7 , a LG C1 48", or a Acer Predator XB273U GXbmiipruzx, all are varying levels of expensive,but that shouldnt be a problem considering u just bought a 3080ti 😛

 

As for this other conversation about the 3080ti and its capability.

The 3080ti and 3090 are to 4k 120hz+, as the 780ti was to 4k 60hz.

Meaning it 'can' do it, but not in enough games to call it fully capable. Sure u can lower details to increase FPS, but lowering details for the sake of resolution is asinine.

Also 'DLSS 4k' isnt 4k, thats like saying 1080p with 8x MSAA is 4k ..it isnt. DLSS is a fancy AA, an upscaler. The last thing we need in this industry/community is more arbitrary labels confusing people.

i don't think the cost for a 4k monitor is worth it over a 1440p monitor with the same color coverage, the good 27inch 4k monitors are discontinued and are getting replaced by 32inch versions, at this point, might as well grab a good midrange 1440p/144hz monitor like the msi MAG274QRF-QD, or the updated LG version coming out later this year.

 

Another option is to just go with an LG oled tv if that's not too big, i would not use a 4k monitor on 1440p full screen, it looks blurry and awful, rather play on 1440p windowed.

 

Even with DLSS, i do not consider any of the ampere cards to be 4k/120hz ready for AAA games, but with gsync/freesync it's not a big deal,  1440p/144hz maxed out vs 4k/120 with dips/gsync is personal preference 

 

if you don't have a budget go for a pg32uqx

I think people are missing something with 1440p monitors, which I use with my 3080.  It's great for modern AAA games at good frame rates and native resolution... But older games or anything else that can do more than 1440p?  You can super sample that.  Black Mesa super sampled at 5K on a 1440p monitor looks amazing.  I honestly can't make out the individual pixels and that pixel shimmer on fine details with FXAA or MSAA?  Nearly non-existent.  Glorious.

You'll basically have 2 choices for high-end displays:

 

4K 144Hz

Best monitor in this class currently is the LG 27GP950.

 

or

 

1440p 240Hz

Best one in this class is the Asus PG279QM.

 

Both excellent monitors. There IS a difference between 1440p and 4K even at 27". People that say there isn't just havent tried 4K yet. But you just have to decide for yourself if you want to go the 4K or 1440p route.

 

Performance wise a 3080Ti can handle 4K very well. You can expect about 90 fps or so in most AAA games nowadays.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
