How Much RAM Do You Have?

I am curious. I am filmmaker, VFX artist and dabble with 3D animation. I use Premiere Pro, After Effects, Cinema 4D, Illustrator, Photoshop and occasionally InDesign (as well as normal generic apps everyone use: browsers, file viewers etc.) and regularly need to have multiple of these apps open at the same time. As they are powerful and require a lot of RAM and since I only have 16GB RAM, I can only have 2 or 3 open maximum. I rarely have problems apart from needing to close and reopen apps regularly.

Is having more RAM worth it? Should I upgrade?

Depends if the applications you use need it or not. If you workload maxes out at 12GB, there is no benefit in having a large surplus of RAM by upgrading to 64GB or so.

4GB used to be the default, then windows kind of made 8GB the default..

 

Now 16GB seems to be more default than ever.

 

Do you need 16GB? No, is it more convenient? Yes.

The standard for today's mid-high end gaming desktops is 32GB. If you're building a workstation, that should be your absolute minimum.

Idk I have  16GB and it works great using lots of programs at once but idk maybe my bar is too low, but I have 65 tabs and I can use blender and listen to spotify at the same time and have a program running in the background with no noticeable drops in performance

16GB but my modded games seem to think that isnt much... I would recommend 16 to most games still and I think its the standard for a gaming rig these days. Its more than enough for most. 32 is only really for those know they need more for a good reason

64Gb in my main desktop, 64Gb in my laptop.

sighs at the time your PC was sold with 1mb of RAM & had to get 4mb or RAM to play Doom.

But there was not only a RAM shortage because of a fire burning down the resin factories, major drug dealers were also using RAM chips as currency so thieves were breaking in to steal RAM. All of this was making prices shoot up.

I have 32 in my home PC but honestly its basically wasted. I wanted all 4 dimms filled for cosmetic reasons but Im a light user and could easily have done 16

As someone who uses a lot of similar software to you, I've mostly been able to get by with the 32 GB my previous PC had. Sure, something like Premiere or After Effects suffers because it can only buffer so much footage for you to preview before it runs out of memory and that obviously goes down the more effects you apply to each clip, but those were the only problems I've ever encountered. I still went with 64 GB with my current PC, mostly because I could easily afford it and I know I have a use for it, both for video software and audio workstation (VST effects can hog quite a bit of memory, especially if you layer tons of them).

That's the sentiment that's been thrown around for years because back then, it was true.

 

It just isn't anymore, especially for a system you're building today that you want to be well equipped tomorrow.

32GB. I upgraded from 16GB because I was routinely hitting page file while working on my NSMBW hack.

I know its the game people throw out there all the time but my MSFS2020 executable alone likes to use 20GB. That's one single application.

I’ve got 32 right now and it’s been great. If I move to a 3900x from my 2700x I’ll likely grab a 64gb kit so the 32 can stay with the 2700x. 
I do a mix of video and photo editing along with gaming while leaving 20-70 firefox tabs open in the background.
