Nvidia Discloses Severe Security Bugs in GPU Driver, vGPU Software

Summary

 

Nvidia has warned of the past existence of a number of security vulnerabilities in their display driver. The group of vulnerabilities could subject games and professionals to privilege-escalation attacks, arbitrary code execution, Dos and information disclosure. The most potentially dangerous flaw of the five bugs in the driver is listed as CVE-2021-1074, which rares 7.5 out of 10 on the CVSS vulnerability scale. (Source below)

It exists in the display driver’s installer, and allows an attacker with local system access to replace an application resource with malicious files. Such an attack may lead to code execution, escalation of privileges, denial of service, or information disclosure.

 

Another high-severity bug, CVE-2021-1075, rates 7.3 on the CVSS scale. NVIDIA Windows GPU Display Driver for Windows, all versions, contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for DxgkDdiEscape where the program dereferences a pointer that contains a location for memory that is no longer valid, which may lead to code execution, denial of service, or escalation of privileges.

 

My thoughts

 I have not seen this vulnerability floating around the internet much yet. Thought I'd get it out there. It appears nvidia has already release patches for these security flaws so anyone who has been ignoring geforce for a while (myself included) might want to go ahead and update their drivers.

Two things come to mind that would exploit this:

  • Crypto mining resource hijacking
  • Ransomware execution.

Regardless, I'll be installing the latest driver to plug these holes.

What's the updated driver? The only one I see is from April 14, 466.11 WHQL.

Is 456.71 affected?
If so, crap. Anything past that gives me screen slowdowns.

It's not completely unexpected, though - my cards are 8 years old now and I imagine that the next generation of NVidia cards will drop Kepler support.

i bet they knew about this and are using it now to try to stop people from using the 3060 driver.....

I've been seeing more and more people pop in here with what seem to be driver issues with AMD to be fair. I don't think AMD is totally out of the woods yet to where we can say that. Yes, there are people having issues with drivers on Ampere, and it seems to be more than AMD, but AMD still has it's growing pains.

another "vulnerability" that is actually largely irrelevant. if someone has local access, then they can do anything, they dont need a dodgy driver to give them the ability to execute anything. If someone is replacing files on your PC, then you're fucked regardless of your driver version.

I ran across this Blizzard forum thread while digging around bit.

Not sure why this would be a Microsoft issue when AMD is able to render WoW in DX12 without issues. But, there you have it for what it's worth. The impasse seems to be between Nvidia and MS.

Should keep in mind that a lot of bugs seen in nvidia drivers, have been around for a while.
