Airbus has launched a program in partnership with the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) to develop a demonstrator laser communication terminal for aircraft. The demonstrator, known as UltraAir, will be the first to fully explore the benefits of beaming WiFi signals to aircraft from space, something Airbus says is set to be the “next revolution in satellite communications”.
 

UltraAir will facilitate communication between an aircraft in flight and a satellite in geostationary orbit. The technology will include a stable, precise optical mechatronic system, which Airbus hopes will provide unprecedented transmission rates, data security, and the capacity to meet the needs of the future.

 

While there are many benefits of this system for military and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), this is not the only target market for the system. Airbus says that, in the longer term, such technology will allow airline passengers to connect to the internet at previously unimaginable speeds, and with more reliability and wider coverage than ever before.

 

Key to this proposition is the SpaceDataHighway, a partnership project between Airbus and the European Space Agency. This highway uses lasers too, to relay information from low-Earth orbit satellites and airborne platforms via GEO satellite at exceptionally high speeds. Initially conceived as a rapid response mechanism for disaster relief and intervention, its capacity for relaying data at rates of 1.8 Gbps could be a crucial cog in the inflight WiFi of the future.n terms of testing, Airbus plans to prepare the technology for its first tests by the end of this year. These initial tests will be undertaken in laboratory conditions, in partnership with Airbus subsidiary Tesat. Tesat has extensive experience in laser communications itself, and will be involved in all the testing processes.Next, ground testing will take place in Tenerife, earmarked for early 2022. During this test, connectivity will be established between an UltraAir demonstrator terminal and a geostationary satellite. Airbus plans to link up with Alphasat, an ESA satellite that was deployed in 2013. It remains the largest European satellite ever built, measuring 2.8 meters in length.If all goes to plan, Airbus will begin flight testing the technology in mid-2022. We could therefore expect deployment in the commercial aviation space some two to four years after that.

Laser terminals are lighter, less power-hungry and more secure than radio frequency communications. With traditional Ku and Ka-band services hitting increasingly frequent bottlenecks, laser communications have the potential to solve a lot of aviation’s connectivity problems in the future.

 

My thoughts

Well this is pretty interesting tech we have here. I am really looking forward to this, tho 1.8 gbps divided over many passengers won't really be great but hopefully it'll be better than the current outrageous internet of aircraft. Who knows, Airbus might partener with tesla and starlink in the future but yea this is pretty cool and Here's to hoping it won't be a let down.

Did some math, should be around 9mb/s for a 200 passenger plane. Should be enough for 480p/720p streaming

you also have to consider overhead for the systems that they are going to add on to the plane that will also use internet and the number of planes per satellite hence why I think that that estimate is a bit optimistic.

Interesting. I know that Spacex has been planning to make Starlink terminals that can be put on planes, would be interesting to see these compete and hopefully drive down costs and therefore prices for the end customer.

I seriously doubt that the avionics are even indirectly connected to the internet here. Additionally, having in flight wifi really isn't a new thing, this would just make such service faster and hopefully cheaper.

Highly unlikely, these Flight control systems are disconnected from the internet, have a lot of redunduncy, both the First officer's and Captain's Flight controls are seperate form each other and couple that with the fact despite all the odds you somehow manage to access the Flight cintrols, you'd have to manually control the plane for every second because manual control disables the autopilot meaning that anything that you'd hope to get out of hacking this aircraft would just vanish into thin air. The only that can plausibly be hacked is the IFE system, but that is disconnected from everything else and is very inconsequential

Ideally systems like this would be separate from the remaining flight equipment...but on another note, it can be good in that planes could remain in contact/send telemetry to ground (even when they fly low and off radar) so you may be able to find crash sites easier.  I'm thinking of the MH370 as an example where they would have known where it was if satellite connections on airplanes were a thing

Seems like it would be simpler just to connect to starlink.  It’s not everywhere or anything yet, but it seems to more-or-less work so far, and it wouldn’t require satellite  launches which are really pricey.  Also lasers have issues with things like clouds.  Aircraft generally fly above most of them but not all the time.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

That depends on the carrier - e.g. Qantas and I think Virgin have free in flight WiFi on most major routes here in Australia. Fast enough that you can stream 4K from YouTube.

It might be costly now, but i think the price will drop once the tech becomes more mainstream. Think what happened with SSDs.
