Are you one of those people who keep changing phones every few years ?

james_bond

I am not. I purchased this phone on 2013 & I am still using it. I use my phone for outgoing & incoming calls only. I don't even do web browsing on my phone. My phone have Opera Mini but frankly I prefer using my desktop for web browsing. All my friends keep buying new phones every 5-6 years. In my opinion this is complete waste of money. Personally instead of spending cash for a phone I will rather buy a good soundbar. I know this comparison between a smartphone & soundbar doesn't make any sense. I am just trying to explain what my priorities are.

How frequently do you change your phone ?

Using only Linux since 2007. Not a single MS Windows or Mac client at home.

Every two years, yeah. I get a new iPhone in the odd-numbered years, at least so far.

I usually don't change phones until they stop working.  Knock on wood have never cracked a screen but I have have had plenty of POS phones that just physically quit working in 2 years or less.

About every 3 years. My telco offers a 36-month installment-plan, so I pay a small amount once a month for 36 months and get a brand-spanking new phone. It's not a hard rule, though: I am perfectly happy with my current phone, so I may or may not just stick to it for longer -- we'll see once the 36 months is gone.

I mostly care about the camera, since I take macro-shots of electronics with it for reverse-engineering and inspection, but I haven't seen any particularly meaningful developments in cameras lately, so upgrading isn't relevant at the moment.

when they die, get mortally damaged, or slow down to a point where I have to wait for a web page or app to open.

Do those things happen to you a lot? I've had only one phone die with some electronics-issue on the mobo, but never managed to damage or break a phone.

i hold onto a phone as long as possible until it breaks to such a point that i can justify a new one instead of trying to find someone to repair it at a non-extortionist price

not really, about once every 3-4 years. none of my phones that have been broke were my fault either, one was kicked off a roof into a swimming pool (partly my fault for leaving it on a roof) and the other got bent (still worked) from being sat on when someone was fucking with me trying to hide my phone from me.

I could not care less about phones. But i have to have a smartphone for work (plans, SmartDok, photo documentation etc).

So i'll generally only change my phone if it gets damaged beyond repair.

If i could i'd just get a cat b35. Only switched phones last year because my honor 8 died.

Probably going to have to switch phones again this year because my Xcover 4 has a cracked screen and its immensely slow.

So as far as the question goes. Preferably never. Mostly when they break. I'd honestly rather not have one at all.

I use my HTC U11 bought in September 2017. It still works perfect so I don't buy a other phone to replace it.

My previous phones :

Nokia Lumia 820 bought in october 2013, it got very slow 3 years later. I kept it for one year more before I got fed up because of its slowness.

And others phones, they are too old for my uses.

I still have my old Nokia Lumia 820, without micro-SIM. I use it for GPS in my car :old-smile:

Generally every 2 or so years. I had a Samsung S4 mini in 2014, iPhone 5s in 2016, iPhone 7 in 2018, and an iPhone XR since the end of 2020. I tend to upgrade for the battery, but also for a faster processor and better camera. I'm hoping to keep my XR for longer than 2 years though, as it needs to (hopefully) do me through university.

Yeah I tend to upgrade my phone every 2 or 3 years. I don't have a hard timeline, I just do it when I feel like I need to or when a device dies outside of warranty... Or in the case of the first Pixel when every replacement they send me is effectively DOA and the warranty is blatantly useless.

Phones:

  1. iPhone 4
  2. Galaxy S3, promptly returned and exchanged with an HTC One M7
  3. Nexus 5X
  4. Pixel 1 (Went through 3 or 4 of these, each replacement they sent me died within days... Normal use.)
  5. iPhone X (Died from water damage right outside warranty, totally my fault.)
  6. iPhone 12 Pro (Current.)

I don't see myself going back to Android in the near future, nothing on that side that's currently tempting to me.

Use a phone until it dies. Currently running a Z2 Force with Lineage. As long as it continues to be a flagship lineage device and first to get major releases I'll be keeping it

Every 2-3 years. Part of it is that I tend to work the devices hard, part of it is that I'm an enthusiast who cares if the cameras are better or the screen is faster. The only reason I didn't replace my iPhone XS with a 12 is because there's not much point to upgrading until it's actually safe to venture out regularly and take photos 'just because.'

I couldn't bear to be an Android user who keeps a phone until it dies... the thought of having a phone that's permanently vulnerable to exploits for half its lifespan (or more) is not very comforting.
