Well, half of Pantera are literally dead now.  Dime in 2004, his brother Vin last night.  :/

Pantera:

Damageplan:

Rebel Meets Rebel:

Above are some of his better projects with him and Dime.

I just saw that this morning. I might not have been a fan of Pantera and Hell Yeah!, but Vinnie was one hell of a drummer.

Weird as it is I just bought a Phil Anselmo release yesterday:

Never cared for his projects after Dime died, tbh.  I liked 90s Pantera as the 80s version was horrible.  Hellyeah is kinda boring to me.  Damageplan was decent, and RMR was kinda weird they also had a very racist/bigoted country singer on vocals aka David Allen Coe.

The whole groove metal thing just never did anything for me. Just always came off as too machismo for me.

I also grew up during the whole nü-metal phase, so everything that utilize syncopated guitar riffs with an upbeat just falls flat for me.

I never knew David Allen Coe was racist, especially since he's been really open about his love of African-American music and about his friendship with Screaming Jay Hawking.

He has a song that starts with the n word and ends with fucker.  Yet he claims that isn't racist.

Yeah, I remember that now.

However, in his defence, Nigger Fucker does comes off his Underground Album, which is basically an exercise in being offensive. The entire album is racist, homophobic and misogonistic as fuck. His previous self-released album was the same way.

It was basically David Allen Coe being an edgelord 20 years before that was a thing.

I was always more into power/traditonal/neo-classical/black/folk/pagan[viking and others]/death/and core that isn't death/metal core aka grind.  Also a huge fan of crossover genres like crossover thrash and blackened genres.

This being one of my favorite crossover bands, the creators for blackened thrash.

Wouldn't Bathory or Sarcofago be the first black/thrash bands? Or maybe they're too early for that.

If you're into black/thrash then give Gronde a listen:

At this point they only have a single demo, but it's a damn good demo.

Bathory did thrash/black/viking, but they weren't considered blackened thrash since they didn't exactly mix them the same way.  As for Sarcofago, they never really get credited for more than being a black metal band that branched off a Brazilian Death Metal band because the original singer was a dick.  xD  So, maybe?  People just associate Aura Noir as being the first one.  I guess that would make Sarcofago a proto-blackened death metal band.

Wagner was a dick? I knew he left Sepultura in less than stellar terms, but I didn't know he was considered a dick.

I guess Aura Noir would be considered the front runner. if we considered Sarcofago and/or Bathroy, we would also have to consider bands like Sodom, Kreator, Destruction, GoatlordHellhammer and maybe even Venom.

And that would be a mess without end

Although, one band that might give Aura Noir a run for first black/thrash band is Nifelheim:

Well, Venom are the god fathers of black metal.  And, if those bands aren't considered "true" blackened thrash, compared to Aura Noir, they're at least proto-bands who influenced the style.  Hellhammer being one of the most notorious, alongside Venom, for being a proto-band of many sub-genres of metal.  I think the others are considered death/thrash/early Bathory style black metal who influenced plenty of others.  But, oddly Nifelheim is only considered black by most, but they do have the sound to a fair point.  However, both Aura Noir and Nifelheim had a demo in 93 and both had an album release with blackened thrash sounding song in 95.

However, to Nifelheim's credit, the 93 aura noir demo was more of an odd trippy black metal experiment.

The first Aura Noir demo does fall in more in line with the very early USBM sound, carved by bands like Goatlord and NME, with the strange time changes and weird, almost doom metal-esque, passages seemingly thrown in at random.

But at least they weren't just sucking Fenriz's dick like some some other bands:
