Nvidia set to launch a rumored world's most powerful mining dedicated processing unit

An Ampere A100 CMP SKU is rumored to be the best mining GPU on the planet, powered by 1,55TB/s HBM2 bandwidth, the CMP 90HX would deliver 86MH/s. The specific A100 chip was not meant for mining as it's primary purpose is for Deep Learning, however it has been...re-optimized for mining performance. 

 

It will become available in Q2 to the general consumer public.

There's a crazy rumor floating around the Twittersphere concerning NVIDIA's dedicated cryptocurrency mining GPU family. As you recall, NVIDIA announced the four-SKU CMP HX family of mining GPUs back in February, reportedly based on a mix of Turing and Ampere GPUs. According to hardware leaker kopite7kimi, NVIDIA is looking to release a CMP HX card based on the bonkers Ampere A100 GPU. The A100 sits at the top of NVIDIA's Ampere GPU stack and is primarily designed for deep learning operations. The A100 is a bandwidth monster thanks to its inclusion of HBM2 memory with 1.55 TB/s of memory bandwidth, compared to 936 GB/s for GeForce RTX 3090 with GDDR6X memory.

 

Thoughts:

 

I think it would be folly, if not outright stupid of someone to buy this in hopes of gaining profit. As it's been said before, if you're looking to start mining now you're late to the party. This unit is meant for serious miners that have a whole company dedicated to crypto.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

that's about AMD's mobile GPU while this is Nvidia's CMP lineup, no?

 

on-topic response: interested to see how HBM affects mining rate and wattage vs G6x, but other than that, meh...

A100 means full chip so hard to manufacture and with HBM2  = Rare, Super Expensive 325W+

If anything this just shows once again how much crypto is here to stay. I wonder if NVIDIA is going to slowly transition from optimizing GPUs for mining to making full blown ASICs. Mining is done at such a massive scale it's essentially the same as normal data centers

It's not rare if you have money. Also the full A100 chip is SXM2 only and pushes 400W

Are the high RTX cards already capable of this level of performance? unless Nvidia have managed to reduce energy usage and manufacturing cost they are not going to be very attractive to the general consumer. The market place for such products is direct to the farm with no associate partners involved this is a way for Nvidia to shift loads of cards at reduced sales price with a larger profit for themselves.

The last reference I saw about crypto had to do with Indian call center people scamming old folks.  They couldn’t get the old folks to send crypto so they had them send cash FedEx which their agent in the US converted to crypto to send to them.   Cash is sometimes used for illegal things.  Crypto is sometimes used for legal things. It’s a big difference in incidence.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I mean rare in terms on manufacture difficulty, but yeah if you have money they are gonna be probably easy to get.

Honestly the only reason any serious mining operations will even consider this card is if it has some insane $/Watt ratio which given the fact that it's probably gonna be using HBM2 I doubt it will have.

 

On an off side, One of many advantages of using GPUs to mine is the fact that you can flip them after a certain period of time which is an advantage that this entire series of cards doesn't have.  This whole thing feels like a decision made by an executive that wants to get in on the crypto craze but doesn't really understand it.  I would love to see Nvidia's sales figures for these products(something we'll probably never see unless we get a leak) because from a business (not gamer) perspective I don't see how this product lineup makes any sense at all.  Yes, they can charge more for these cards than they do for their GeForce equivalents, but the market for crypto cards is tiny/non-existent in comparison to the gaming market where they can release GPUs for (almost) any price point they want right now.  Plus the whole driver BS they tried to pull (ignoring the eventual hacking of their cards) was contingent on the fact they they have control over the market which they don't!  AMD cards are a valid option for mining so they were ultimately just shooting themselves in the foot while encouraging potential customers to buy their competitor's product.

Arch is better than Ubuntu. Fight me peko.

AFAIK, nvidia has trouble keeping up with the A100 production and the hyperscalers are still waiting for their orders, which is expected given how massive the die is and that hyperscalers account for over half of all of nvidia's DC sales, so I doubt that's the case.

Well like my first post these would be only made from dies that failed to validate as a A100. Usually those get destroyed and turned back in to raw material and reprocessed again, that's actually not very cost effective so there is an incentive to not do that and find a way to sell them.

 

I have no idea if this rumor is real mind you, I doubt it, but this is the only possible way it would exist.
