Anyone remember the pressure-sensitive buttons on the PS2 Controller?

Thought it was a pretty cool feature to have in games like Ace Combat, pressing the button hard meant using your boost.

Press button hard, plane goes faster! 😄

 

Was a bit clunky in Metal Gear Solid 2 though where it made the difference between crouching and crawling, that was pretty rubbish.

Pretty sure that was not the case with PS2 controller. I even tore couple down over the years and none of them had hardware for that type of feature.

I also took apart couple of PS3 controllers and those didnt have it either. I am also certain that PS4 controllers dont have that.

I vaguely remember trying to use it in Gran Turismo, but practically speaking the amount of range between not pressing at all and all the way down was so small it didn't give me any more control.

I thought it was a pretty cool feature and was kind of bummed they changed the design on the PS3 (with the R2/K2 becoming analog).

 

In the end, it was a worthwhile change which made more sense.

PS2 and PS3 both had it. The only reason I'm trying to hunt down an official PS3 controller is because it's the only proper way to play MGS2/MGS3. The PC and Xbox version can't use pressure sensitive buttons so you can't cancel a shot. You're supposed to be able to press square, hold an enemy up, slowly release, and put your gun down to do whatever else you need to do. If you release quickly, you fire off a shot. On PC/Xbox, you have to waste a shot (and possibly get detected) each time you want to hold someone up. There might be an alternative way, and you may be able to map a PS4/PS5/Xbox controller with pressure sensitive triggers to do this correctly, but it's a hassle when I already have the HD collection on PS3 and I'm already used to the controls as they were.

You can un equip your gun to cancel a shot, learned that when playing the vita version

The Dualshock 2 definitely had that feature, but outside MGS and maybe racing games, not a lot of games really made a lot of use of it. It was difficult to get precise input, and many third party controllers straight up didn’t support the feature.

 

 In Gran Turismo 4, I prefer using the analog stick for brake/accelerator as it’s much easier to get precise inputs than with the pressure sensitive buttons.

It really was a weird feature that both the PS2 and OG Xbox had, and I'm kinda sad that we didn't really see it past them (though it was honestly pretty janky). The only games I've played on the PS2 that I recall supporting them are GTA 3 and Vice City (San Andreas might've too, I don't remember). It's a little insane how many pressure-sensitive inputs the OG Xbox had: The triggers, the normal face buttons, and white/black.
