Phoenix miner NiceHash plugin potentially compromised

It looks like there are some concerns about the Phoenix Miner. It is a relatively common third-party plugin for NiceHash Miner (it was installed by default on my installation). NiceHash are advising anyone who has used PhoenixMiner to stop and consider their computer and any account details stored on it as potentially compromised. They are recommending that users reinstall their OS, change all passwords and activate 2FA, and move funds in any cryptocurrency wallets immediately. It seems a little unclear whether it is the official Phoenix Miner source itself that was problematic... or whether NiceHash pushed an update from an unofficial (and compromised) source.

This brings the possibility that the Phoenix miner's author wants to cover its tracks and disappear or even do something malicious.

I only started using NiceHash yesterday (after hearing about it on the WAN show) as a way to heat my office and make some money at the same time. This is definitely an interesting introduction to it... 

 

I was a little uncomfortable with the level of access and third party plugins, but I went for it anyway. In retrospect, probably a bad idea and I should have done more research. 

 

Probably like a lot of NiceHash users, I am running this in the background on my main computer. Plenty of personal data available.

 

Other people on the forum might have a better idea how concerned I should be at this point. Are NiceHash over-reacting or should I be searching for my Windows installation media and changing passwords right now?

Lol if Nicehash gets hacked again they'll never recover. To be fair they did eventually pay back my $400 worth of bitcoins I had but they sorta have a bad taste

Just keeping this here as a From what I am reading online, this seems like an alarmist overreaction from NiceHash (a company which already has an iffy reputation in my book) to try and convince people to join their platform. Seems like all that changed was the download link for Pheonix was taken down on Mega? The language used in the Nicehash post just seems super fishy, I think I will just continue to not pay their high fees.

If it was then it has certainly backfired for casuals like me. It does feel like it could be an over-reaction or attempt to push people to the quick miner, but I don't know enough about it to judge... which is my problem. After this, I'll probably just go back to my old policy of not doing something like this when don't have the time to learn the ins and outs, and not bother mining at all.

I agree from reading they are just trying to go as extreme as possible. Basically what happened the link went down (for an unknown reason) and they can't verify the code since it's not open source so they are telling everyone it could be compromised. Will I keep using it no but I don't think wiping my computer is necessary unless they can show proof the code was compromised or show the reason why they think this. They literally said on their reddit post they have zero idea if something was affected. Look don't get me wrong you should always be extra cautious however this just seems a little over the top without some reason behind it.

 

Edit: So digging more into this it looks like poor PR communication between management and Devs. Devs in discord kinda cleared he only cause of alarm is there is no official phoenix miner link anymore and so they said don't download not unofficially and they will not download it anymore on nicehash. I don't understand why the PR team went so overboard.

Ok here is some more info looks like they accidentally pushed a compromised version 5.5d which doesn't exist only 5.5c does. Incompetent devs trying to throw blame disgusting I'm removing this trash software and setting up my own stuff. Luckily I was able to confirm I had 5.5c (that's what the version number said anyway I deleted it anyway so I can't confirm hash hopefully they didn't also somehow change the version # but that's doubtful) and not the compromised version thank goodness that auto update was failing.

 

Basically someone at Nicehash screwed up after the 5.5c link went down and decided to find a working link and like an idiot didn't check the hash before pushing an update out with the new version. So if you were on 5.5c your probably fine just make sure to compare the hash if you still have the files. If your version is anything else you need to do a full wipe and account reset.

Looks like the link was taken down he says sometime yesterday (It could be he only noticed it yesterday because Nicehash had a post up 15hrs before his so I would be cautious and say 48hrs the infected version was circulating) They said that Nicehash is being way over reacting because nothing happened to their software except that it was removed. I am guessing because either the Nicehash dev pushed out a malware laden one in the past day or so or they are using the link going down to push people to their miner (I am going with the later the way that thread is going). The drama in that thread is out of control and it seems that the Nicehash bridge needs to be burnt the way their acting.

It was 1-2 days ago, it lasted a brief time until they pulled it of. I think it was "newer" than 5.5c, unfortunatelly, cuz I remember reading "phoenix miner updated" "version 5.6",  something like that. 
I had an UAC box oppened, clicked OK as usual, but my pc got turned of because of the rain here, so who knows wtf happened... 
Uninstalled everything related to NCMiner, and made backups of important data. 
Sticking with quickminer for now.

Yeah I think a good rule of thumb at this point is if your miner was updated in the past 48hrs to any version other than 5.5c wipe your stuff and reset your accounts.

Still just gonna stick with NHOS on a dedicated box. I had tried the windows app but it feels sketchy, my security is worth the lower earnings missing out on using the more powerful card.

Funny enough Nicehash and their over the top reaction has pushed me to start using Phoenix. I know it sounds crazy but after going through a lot of pages in the bitcointalk form it's clear the only person acting like an adult in the room during this whole situation was Phoenix. They also published all hashes, verified their file integrity, and made a transaction from their original account to prove their identity.

Someone debunked this on r/EtherMining
TL;DR 

PhoenixMiner binaries were hosted on MEGA until they shut it down so it's no longer uploaded there. NH is allegedly trying to twist this with FUD claiming PhoenixMiner is "compromised" and telling people to switch to their own miner instead.

 

According to staff, the "compromised" version was never pushed to users anyway. So they're trying to say that PhoenixMiner has been compromised since previous versions as well? Their arguments just doesn't make sense.
 

 

 

I'm pretty sure whatever they're trying to communicate, they do seem scummy from trying to profit from this opportunity. That or just bad PR.

I do wish LMG would weigh in on this as they promoted NiceHash before in the past.

Thanks for the info. Read so many conflicting things on it and couldn't be bothered to wade through it all and figure out what was going on.

 

Luckily, I pretty much only use my use my Windows partition for games and Microsoft Office.

 

Easy enough for me to just do a clean install to be on the safe side, but will have been a massive pain for some people if they took that advice.

It's fine Nicehash is just being a crappy company as always. I'm honestly shocked that LTT hasn't put out a statement and pulled down the video that they did with Nicehash.
