If Steam didn't exist, would you still be a PC gamer?

You order on a website, or go locally, You've been doing this for years...... a warehouse somewhere in your country ships you a boxed copy of the install DVD's after a varied small amount of time,it arrives you install, if anything goes wrong you ring them and have a chat, or possibly go online to rectify via emails.

^Modern Oldschool^, before Download services broadened out their wings.

No, actually. I used to game on PC as a secondary method of gaming to my Xbox as I didn't have the hardware for good gaming (My Xbox ran most games better than my desktop). I only bought a new computer because of steam and there being enough games I enjoyed on PC (most of which I learned about through steam) that I felt it was justified to get a new up-to-date one.

Still need a new GPU though.

I can be a cynical a**hole at times. I apologize if I cause any offence at those time. I also occasionally have issues communicating my point. Extreme introversion + Photographic memory + Some other things.

  • 9 months later...

Very likely. Still, I would have taken a while longer than I did to get into it fully. Convenience really helps for that sort of thing.

I was a PC gamer before steam, I see no reason why I would be after it went.

It would be more a hassle to manage, but I'd probably own less games but enjoy and play the ones I owned more.

The way people talk about Gabe Newell these day's is the way Apple fanboi's talk about Saintly Steve Jobs, have you joined a Cult like these crackpots at Scientology or something?

Yes I was a PC gamer before steam existed anyway. Someone else would have done it. In fact I think I bought my first Digital game with EA's downloader BF 2142. ( which is now that pos origin )

Steam wasn't always the only option for a lot of games you know. I grew up without Steam being related to EVERYTHING. Steam existed but it was not mandatory. Valve having this sort of power that actually makes people think about whether they'd play on PC is ridiculous, this is why I support more publishers doing self publishers through DRM free means or their own DRM applications such as Origin and Uplay (Although Uplay is terrible because it was implemented very poorly and never was fixed).

Why should it change anything ?

I bet most of people are buying games from Kinguin and websites like these.

Steam = DRM, nothing else.

I was playing PC games(such as StarCraft...etc.) before Steam existed.

Anyone who has a sister hates the fact that his sister isn't Kasugano Sora.
Anyone who does not have a sister hates the fact that Kasugano Sora isn't his sister.
I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...

Steam did solve a set of problems which was plaguing the industry; limited shelf space, problems of physical discs, need for non-intrusive DRM, faster updates, distribution issues, connecting communities etc... They do deserve some credit for the PC gaming resurgence. But if Steam was never invented there is a chance somebody else would have implemented something similar at some point.
