If Steam didn't exist, would you still be a PC gamer?

DoubleY

I started gaming on PC long before Steam, would just mean I don't have a nice tidy place to keep all my games that I never play.

Yes. One of the great things about PC is that you're not tied down to one platform.

I probably would of gone console if there was no really good digital stores.

Don't hurt me

Lol because Steam is the only digital store? What? If Steam didn't exist btw, games that are Steam only would. Games are not dependant on Steam to function.

If Lord GabeN was never born, and there was no Steam (nor origin or uPlay or anything like that) would you be a PC gamer? I know personally I wouldn't. But I want to hear from you guys :)

This is an odd question, because PC gaming is many, many years older than Steam. You don't even have to be very old to remember pre-Steam PC gaming, it wasn't that long ago.

Why on earth would the existence of Steam matter in one's decision to game on the PC? Why is this thread starting from the assumption that Steam is even a positive thing? While I like Steam at the end of the day, it carries as many inconveniences as conveniences, and at it's core it's still a DRM solution. So why be so unquestioningly devoted to it?

A lot of it has to do with what happened ~2004-2010~

Many popular games weren't getting ports, franchises that initiated on the PC and were made for the PC continued to be made on consoles instead. Microsoft turned on PC gaming with the 360 release. Some may not remember but Microsoft used to make good PC games. The timing of HL2/CS:S also helped Steam become a refuge when the rest of the industry was turning the other way.

This is LTT. One cannot force "style over substance" values & agenda on people that actually aren't afraid to pop the lid off their electronic devices, which happens to be the most common denominator of this community. Rather than take shots at this community in every post, why not seek out like-minded individuals elsewhere?

Of course I would. I have no problem using Origin, Uplay, or whatever else. As long as I can play games.

Granted Steam and Origin, are my favorite.

That is a very difficult question. I will do my best to answer such a complex question with a very simple answer. Yes.

I got into PC gaming from a game that wasn't even on Steam so... I loved the hell out of FFXI and must have sunk 400 days of play time into it. The Xbox 360 ran it like shit and it had an issue of you having to reinstall over the most basic stuff. I was on a 3 Mb connection back then and it was painful downloading 10 GBs+ of game files. There was also an unpatched bug that would make a lot of Xboxs freeze when a (raid) besieged event ended. So I got it on PC where it ran better and wasn't prone to breaking for no reason. Now I've moved onto bigger and better things... like FFXIV...

You could make your own program that could store shortcuts of all your installed games!

I was a PC gamer before Steam, and I would still be even if it had never been created, although I's sure I wouldn't own nearly as many games.

Steam simplifies buying and playing a large selection of games (I can't imagine having CD/DVDs for every game I own on Steam and then needing to digging them out if I wanted to reinstall something.)

Start, click the tab for games generates a decent list usually. (Win 7)

For Win 8 I just use tiles off on the side for anything not on Steam. Cough Origin cough Uplay cough. Sorry, I think I'm coming down with something.

I didn't think about that, yeah that woul work. I'd probably still be a PC gamer without Steam.

Don't have a steam account & never would consider making one. I refuse to be corralled! Once upon a time, back in a place near Steam first launched. A game long anticipated was born. The game was DOOM 3. The time, was 2004. In order to play online it was mandated that one must register an account online. "Curse you steam" *shakes fist at the sky* - so what happens you ask? Gave Doom 3 to my friend.
