An incredible flagship with cut corners - Mi 11 announced

In contrast to what normally would be Samsung to announce the first Snapdragon equipped phone (in this case the 5nm 888) every generation, XiaoMi has taken the lead this time with the Mi 11.

Quote

It is officially the first phone with Snapdragon 888 chipset and comes with Xiaomi’s best display - a 6.81” AMOLED with QHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.

The Snapdragon 888 can be combined with either 8GB RAM and 128/256GB storage or 12GB of RAM and 256GB storage. There’s no microSD slot onboard, so no option to add more after the purchase. The main camera setup consists of the 108MP cam, known from the Mi 10 series (the one that is 1/1.33” in size), with a 7P lens and f/1.85 lens in front. The 13MP ultrawide angle camera has 123-degree FoV, while the third snapper, sitting on the side, is a basic 5MP macro lens. On the front, Xiaomi placed a 20MP selfie cam, tucked behind a punch hole in the upper left corner.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 has a 4,600 mAh power cell that supports 55W wired fast-charging, 50W wireless, and 10W reverse charging. It will work with every Quick Charge 4+, Quick Charge 3+, and Power Delivery 3.0 adapter. Xiaomi has decided to skip the charger in the retail box but will give a 65W GaN adapter for free if you don't have a compatible charger already. Other highlights of the Xiaomi Mi 11 include Harman Kardon-tuned stereo speakers, improved Night Mode capabilities, dual 5G connectivity (at Sub-6 GHz networks), Wi-Fi 6E support, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and all the finest navigation services. Pre-order has already started, with the first sale scheduled for January 1, 2021. The Xiaomi Mi 11 will be offered in six different colors - Black, White, Blue, Khaki Vegan Leather, Purple Leather, and Special Edition with Lei Jun’s autograph for some reason.

Pricing begins at CNY3,999 ($610/€500)and goes up to CNY4,699 ($720/€585) for the roomiest memory option. The first flash sale is scheduled for January 1, 2021.

Thoughts: While the specs are certainly impressive, it has a lot of weird tradeoffs like selling their high speed charger separately and no headphone jacks. I wonder what will competitors like OnePlus and Samsung come up with.

Looks like a solid phone, although I'd note that Samsung often isn't the first to announce a phone using a new Snapdragon chip — the Galaxy S line doesn't usually get updated until February or later.

Also, just waiting for someone to claim this is "proof" Apple and Samsung overprice their devices while forgetting that Chinese prices for Chinese-made phones tend to be aggressive as a matter of course.

Good decision to get rid of chromed part of the camera hump as showcased initially. That looked horrible. Same color as the back is much better design decision.

It's allegedly going to be priced at around 700€. A lot of money, but compared to 1200€ nonsense Samsung is releasing, one hell of a phone. Having SD 888 and 12GB RAM, it's going to be a very solid performer.

Makes sense.  My understanding is that the 888 is not actually in number line.  It was altered TO 888 for marketing reasons because of “888”s lucky number status.  Lucky numbers are a Taoist thing which makes it more applicable in China.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

And also forgetting that the Chinese-made phones are still skimping on something, which is often in the form of long-term updates and support. Many of the devices they launch - especially the budget-oriented ones - get axed from software updates after barely a year. Redmi/Redmi Note phones for example get one major update, and Xiaomi phones only get quarterly security updates for ~2 years. This is poor, even compared to other Android manufacturers (not to say they don't still have a lot to improve on as well).

Spoiler

The Mi CC 9e, Redmi Note 8/8T/8Pro, Redmi 8/8A all launched in 2019. The Redmi 8A Dual is a 2020 phone. There is not a single phone listed here that will get Android 11 that was launched prior to 2019.

The adapter for free is not 65W Gan is a new 55W Gan

The old 65W Gan sells CNY 149 (≈22 USD) support Mi11 50W(10V 5A) ,it can supprt  laptop 65W USB pd ,is a type c charger

new 55W Gan sells CNY 99(15USD) support Mi11 55W(11V 5A) ,also supports laptop or  with 45W USB Pd,is a change usb typeA

If you bought a package without a charger when you bought it, you can contact Xiaomi customer service to get a Xiaomi charger for 0.01 CNY. If you buy the full amount at the offline Xiaomi home, you will get a thermos cup and a headset. The interesting thing is that this is a 3.5mm headset, but there is no typec to 3.5mm cable that comes with Mi 11

I mean , at this point all android manufacturures have the same strategy, first Xiaomi, then Oppo and now one plus . they just throw big numbered specs into the device and call it a day , im not surprised if we see plastic backed s21 or 2mp macro cameras on $1000 phones. Apple makes money by services after selling u the phone , but android makes money by selling volumes of phones , so they dont care about u after you buy it and swipe your card. Maybe they throw a 1 year warranty at you and thats it. I hope this strategy somehow changes even though it is a pretty far fetched idea.
