Computer shutting down after upgrading to RTX 3070

Mikael Mathisen

Hello.

I just upgraded to 3070 yesterday.

I jumped in Warzone, and did a steady 100-120 fps on all High/Ultra settings.

After a litte while, maybe 20min, the computer shuts down. It's not like a controlled shutdown, power just breaks.

I started hwmon to monitor the temps and so on. Everything looks kinda okay. Temps up towards 70 degrees Celsius under load.

I see this section i never noticed before called "Powers". Under load i see the GPU Powers go all the way up to 103%.

Does anyone know what this powers section is? Could it be how much power it draws from the PSU?

I have a Thermaltake Toughpower 850 PSU. It's powerfull, but it's old. Do I have to get a new one maybe?

Attached a screenshot of my hwmon.

At this point, I'm at work, and theres not any noticable load on my rig :)

If no BSOD, then yes could be PSU. Use HWinfo64 instead (much better) 🙂

Power cutting like that is almost always either thermal protection on the CPU/GPU or your PSU over current protection is triggering.

The temps you are stating look safe so I'm strongly leaning towards the PSU.

it's likely the psu, make sure u have 2 separate 8pin cables to power the card, if it is, then whether you try undervolting the card per youtube or switch the psu is up to you

Tried reinstalling graphic driver *(using DDU) and updating BIOS?

A lot of new RTX cards are triggering OCP in decent PSUs (I believe the transient spikes in power demands from the GPU are what are triggering this issue for thousands of others). You might need a different PSU to make it work, even if your old PSU otherwise works fine.

|PSU Tier List /80 Plus Efficiency| PSU stuff if you need it.

When launching HWINFO64, you can tick 'sensors only' for a similar view to HWmonitor :)
