It won’t kill encrypted end to end because open source apps already exist, algorithms are known and accessible, and future apps can be freely developed. In the US at least, computer code is also currently protected speech. To ensure sovereign-resistant end to end encryption is killed would mean tight regulations on the development of computer programming, and who can/can’t write code. That ship had set sailed many decades ago. Short of implementing an internet whitelist for all sites, it is practically impossible to police the use of encryption by individuals and bad actors.

Eh all you need is to require that your countries internet systems will only pass information around in specific formats and you can kill that because those apps simply won't work.

SSL is evil and a states enemy and a public safety risk so it will obviously be blocked too!

There problem = solved!

I'm going to keep saying this.

We should jump onboard with it, and force it through with the stipulation that it applies as much to elected officials as it does to the common citizen.

Then sit back and watch the fireworks ensue as 4Chan leaks all of congress' text messages and emails.

I'd prefer we not have to go this route, but if these daft bastards aren't going to give up then I say we go full on malicious compliance.

Yes but they might also uncover Boris's dick pics to a Russian violinist (allegedly) 🤮

The larger criminal and terrorist organizations will still have encrypted messaging, while government employees won't and will therefore be more likely to be blackmailed. From a security point of view it looks like a net negative?

Having nothing to hide doesn't mean you don't have the right to.

It's just one big control game based on paranoia, ironically, from 'the' Government trying to spy on it's citizens. It can't be helped because it bleeds into everything surrounding it - it's an inevitable powergrab.

There is some truth in what they are saying, that encrypted data could contain information that threatens public safety.

The issue is that breaking encryption somewhere along the chain is very dangerous, and will highly likely result in a greater threat to public safety by leaking sensitive government information or some other sensitive information.

I bet there would also be a lot of people who would actively rebel and use VPN's to connect to other countries where encryption is enforced.  The really big hit would be if we did something like Mexico did where they've banned installing non-OEM operating systems onto devices.

Either way, it's pretty unlikely we'll actually have a say in what happens and can only hope the people at the top get a lot of very smart and objective thinkers to consult them before they make any decision.

People need to realize hackers always get around things, and there will always be ways to transmit our data encrypted despite any government enforcement.  The people who do bad things want to be hidden and will use those methods.  The only people you're exposing is good people.

This sadly is the way you need to think about this sort of thing. Thats exactly what they could do as another example.

Oh it's definitely a net negative. But unfortunately only the dullest crayons in the box seem to end up in government, and they apparently only learn the hard way.

been trying for years to get tech companies to agree to encryption backdoors and the group made similar calls to tech giants last year and in 2018.

Reminds me of Edward Snowdens new podcast with Joe Rogan in his new studio in Texas. Within 20 minutes he talks about that line of BS government spews, in the interest of public safety BS.

All thats need is a facebook account and-or a cell phone because cell phones trace your movements.

If you watch The First 48, many cases solved with facebook accounts of stupidly dumb murderers who take not even a $100, or tracking the phone and putting a stupidly dumb murderer in the area near the time.

Next up is those Border shows, where the tourist says no biz just tourism. Lets take a look at your cell phone text messages..... busted. Or they got work gear in their luggage. DUMB! The best are the retards who bring personal use illegal drugs across the border, love it good laugh. I felt sad for a guy in his 80's getting cuffed and stuffed for brass knuckles found between the cushions from 20 yrs ago.

In the UK most people use Net Curtains on the windows of their home.

They do this for one primary reason, privacy.

Using Net Curtains doesnt mean everyone in the UK is hiding some illegal activity in their home, nor does anyone walking down the street think that when they look over and see windows obscured by net curtains.

Encryption, VPNs, and other security software act in the same way. Using them doesnt mean ur hiding something illegal, it means u want ur privacy.

The 5,9,14 eyes alliance member states can call for, demand , and even get their way, all they want. But so long as their are suppliers of services outside those states, people will have access to them.

The best VPNs for example are outside these members states for a reason. E.G NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark.
