Hacker groups chain VPN and Windows bugs to attack US government networks

Summary

According to the FBI, hackers have gained access to government networks by combining VPNs and Windows bugs including the Zerologon.
 

According to the alert, the observed attacks combined two security flaws known as CVE-2018-13379 and CVE-2020-1472.

 

CVE-2018-13379 is a vulnerability in the Fortinet FortiOS Secure Socket Layer (SSL) VPN, an on-premise VPN server designed to be used as a secure gateway to access enterprise networks from remote locations.

 

The CVE-2018-13379, disclosed last year, allows attackers to upload malicious files on unpatched systems and take over Fortinet VPN servers.

 

CVE-2020-1472, also known as Zerologon, is a vulnerability in Netlogon, the protocol used by Windows workstations to authenticate against a Windows Server running as a domain controller.

My thoughts

Yikes. The fact that there has been a patch for Zerologon for a few months and it’s still a vulnerability makes me question if anyone is actually doing their job at some places!

 

Im not entirely convinced the FBI or the gov have things under control. Hackers gained access to election systems and they brush it off like no big deal bc nothing happened.

Bluntly, I'm not as surprised as you are at the slow speed of updating.  Updating usually requires downtime, and IT is usually caught between needing to meet their security obligations while at the same time the higher-ups usually refusing to allow downtime unless necessary, and the standard of what's necessary ends up being somewhat nebulous. Then, it takes scheduling a change window weeks or months in advance once someone actually says it IS necessary.  When it hits the fan, you'd better have a complete paper trail otherwise you're going to be the scapegoat.

Russia is already influencing our elections. That’s why they brush it off. Also even if they get in to the election system, it’s not like everyone votes electronically. We still do old fashion paper ballots. 
 

Secondly it’s a well known fact that the Pentagon has gotten cracked multiple times. That’s a bit more concerning. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
