2080ti in SLI? Worth it?

Noctua Fan Fan

I am looking for people's opinions on a particular move I might make for my GPU.

Other options differing too far from this idea are appreciated, but not for the discussion of this specific post. I know what the best option is for my GPU overall (wait for 30 series/AMD I know), I'm just looking to have a conversation around this specific hypothetical.

Option: Sell 2070 Super, Buy 2 x 208TI and run in SLI

There's a little speculation in this post, however we're going to work on a few assumptions/facts as described below.

1. The market for second hand 2080TI is very appealing. I am seeing them as low as £350 ($449 for those of us who use Freedom Units).

2. The 3070 is a minimum of a 35% improvement on the 2080ti

3. The future of SLI looks bleak with the new 30 series cards.

4. We're not considering AMD an option for this build's GPU.

So. Is it worth it to get 2 x 2080TI and run in SLI? Thoughts on the future of this system as a result of this upgrade.

Side question, what about a £50/$90 upgrade to a 2080ti from a 2070 Super. Would you take that offer?

Looking forward to some people's opinions!

Just a waste of money generally, sli is dead and it bring little to no benefits (when it comes to gaming at least) and you'll be better off with an over all better gpu.

though that depends on the workload.

Nvidia appears to be trying to kill off SLI. I imagine their driver development team are happy about that and so are game devs.

At this point, SLI's not worth it. Performance increases will get worse and worse as SLI becomes more and more removed from support and any bugs and issues aren't going to be fixed as quickly.

Multi-GPU is only really useful now for productivity applications that don't utilise SLI in the first place.

Absolutely not. You'd be better of spending a little bit more and getting a 3090. SLI isn't really supported in most titles.

The 3070 is supposed to tie the 2080Ti, not be an improvement to it. The 3080 is supposed to be around the numbers you've quoted for the 3070.

Sli is dead dead. There are no new games that are coming out that support it. There is not even a handful of games this year that support it and of those maybe 1 does it well.

Simply put don't do multi gpu it's dead. Amd killed it off with their last gpu's and nvidia is doing it now too only allowing it on the 3090 which means they'll drop it with their next cards fully and developers are not gonna put in any resources for the 8 people that have 2 3090's.

Love these replies. You're all right. I never could afford SLI so I think maybe I'm just trying to get it before its gone haha.

How about the £50 upgrade to a 2080TI from a 2070 Super assuming I can sell my GPU?

If 2080 Ti's are so cheap, do you think a 2070S would fare much better in terms of sales price? I'd assume a 3070 is a better upgrade.

Up to you. Is your current gpu lacking? If the answer is no then no. If yes then maybe. Then it becomes a only if you can sell it for a decent price and the 2080ti is at least 100 less than a 3070 as if it's almost the same price you might as well get the new card and get some warranty.

If a 2080Ti is really going for $450 you're not going to get more than about $150 for a 2070S.

You're all spot on about the 30 series, I know its the best option, I'm just exploring other avenues to watercool a card and have a project to tinker with somehwat inexpensively.

My PC's bottleneck is probably the CPU. In reality my PC runs great, if a little warm at idle because its a hot CPU (65 under load).

Watercooling even if it's just a gpu is not cheap. Easily at least 250$ on top of whatever card you purchase.

How so? You need a block, tubing, fittings, a pump, a reservoir, a rad and fans. 2080ti blocks are not going for cheap at all.

Good point! I already have a custom loop and enough fittings. Its just the cost of the block.

Do NOT get that block it leaks. Either way. Just get a 3070 at launch and roll with that. Or whichever ends up being cheaper. Don't pay the price of a 3070 for a 2080ti as it's still a used card.

Ive seen the same videos as you, and it only leaks when excess pressure is forced onto it from Jay's analysis.

Yeah that's not true. It leaks when just existing. Gpu sag makes it leak. Still this is very bad as no other block does so and just wait a year or so when the seal wears a bit water will start going down.

Why get a faulty block that leaks with very minimal force (just poking it with your finger is enough to cause it to go spraying) when a non leaking block is an option.

Honestly, I'd need to look into it more and see if Corsair have done any work to resolve the issue.

Why that one? I have HydroX everything else, so to avoid mixing metals etc. I just stayed in the whole corsair sku.

If you have recommendations on another block that won't be mixing metals etc and will fit the fittings I already have then 100% down.

Depends on what metals your hydrox components exist out of. You can always just put a anti corrosion agent in the loop and not worry.

Corsair did not do anything to fix it. The only fix there is is a ziptie across the card to prevent it from leaking.
