Remote SSH vscode C/C++ extension

Hi,

I'm running vscode connected to a remote SSH server over a VPN for a large project (300,000+ files) and I'm running into issues with the C/C++ extension. I can't seem to get intellisense to work, usually Ctrl + Click or F12 will take you to the definition of a function/object but for me it just loads indefinitely. The extensions logging, even when set to debug, doesn't seem to show anything meaningful, it suggests that it started the search and then I just never get a reply.

Any ideas?

Bonus, any other IDEs I can look at? I tried CLion (which works great) but the remote server takes up so much CPU, and since it's a work system, I can't just be hogging the resources. Would love to try something like nvim but have no idea where I would start with that.

Can't you just mount the remote folder into your sytem with sshfs? Performance is likely going to be a bit bad, but it may be worth a try, because this way you could use any editor of your liking in your local system.

I can give it a go, it's quite a big project though and I've seen people say that sshfs is not so good with large projects.

I'd expect your only viable solution will be a remote desktop setup. All the remote file access protocols have significant per-file overhead.

I sadly don't really have an option. It's a work provided build server that I do not have explicit sudo access to. I'm going to chat with some fellow team members tomorrow and see how they are running things.
