EV startup Lucid announces their cars capable of over 800km in range and the fastest charging

Summary 

 EV startup Lucid announces their range of electric cars. They also claim to have the fastest charging speed, up to 20 miles per minute. In real world, this could mean 300 miles of range in 20 minutes of charging.

They claim that it can go from 0 to 100 in under 3 seconds AND can do a quarter mile in 9.9 seconds- THE FASTEST of any electric cars. Other features of this car are anything but astounding. A 34" 5K centre console, retractable central Pilot Panel, machine milled physical buttons complimenting the digital display, built in Amazon Alexa.

The headlamps have a Micro Lens Array system comprised of literally thousands of “light channels." Developed entirely in-house, this technology provides the brightest, most precise and advanced lighting system ever. Digital steering of light direction is possible by digitally switching light channels in different directions, revolutionising visibility and enhancing safety.

 

Pricing wise, this will start at $80K and the top end model could go upwards of $169K. Yikesssss

My thoughts

 Real competition for Tesla? Competition is in the end good for the customer! But then I realised that Lucid doesn't cater to the same market as Tesla does. The real competition between these two companies will be between the charging speed and range.

I wouldn't consider the range specification from different companies comparable because they probably have different standards as with any company that estimates a battery's performance in certain tasks, it only has a 113KWh Battery powering 1080 HP in dual motors, things just don't add up.

 

Competition is great but it would be problematic if companies started pulling numbers out of their ass to compete

honestly depending on the specs of the $80k model that might be a "reasonable" price if its as luxurious and high performance as it sounds. i'm skeptical of "300 miles of range in 20 minutes of charging," without some fancy battery tech that kind of charging load is probably bad for longevity. also that contrasts to their charging speed claim of "20 miles per minute [of charging]" which is probably some peak measurement. nice to have a bit of competition though, if they turn out to be any good.

The word “capable” hangs in my mind. Capable in practice or capable in theory? If their max range is 800 miles and the battery is totally empty and they go fro 0% to 3/8ths full in 20 minutes wouldn’t that be more or less standard fast charging?  The “capable” bit may ignore some practical limitations.  I don’t know.

It is still mostly speculation and estimates. We'll wait for it to come out in the market and see how accurate these numbers are.

I'll be waiting for MKBHD to go like "So I've been using this for the past couple months".

probably as capable of that as amd's 3950x is capable of 4.7 ghz

Lucid is a Luxury brand unlike Tesla. So luxury wise, yes, 80K seems "reasonable".

Also, all these are just claims. We'll have to wait for MKBHD's review of one of these to see how they fare!

Just talked to a guy who is interested in alternative fuels tech.  He thinks the 40% efficiency of hydrogen may be inflated because they’re forgetting all the cryonics stuff and pointed out that the losses of compressed hydrogen transportation were so insane that it simply cannot be traded as a fuel.  The stuff just migrates through solid steel.  The molecules are too small.  Liquid hydrogen vessels have double layers of Mylar on the inside to attempt to reflect the molecules back. I was left thinking that perhaps the Nikola video was a bit over positive and marketing forward.

Having a Tesla model 3 for a while, all I can say is I'd never go back to an ICE car EVER.

ICE cars are noisy, lots of chemicals, lots of maintenance, and lots of things to break.

35k miles on the 3, all I've done is wash it and rotate the tires. It just keeps going.

Upfront costs are a bit more, but it's way cheaper to run! And having a "full tank" every morning, I've saved probably a weeks' worth of time not having to stop at the gas station all the time.

 

The more competition the better! Bring it on! Everybody needs to switch!

I was ready to when my 2003 Mini Cooper CVT got its shifter “out of alignment” which caused it to silently start destroying the engine.  I was presented with a 13k repair bill for a car that was worth 9k.  I donated it to npr with 30some thousand on it.  I am beyond done with drivetrains.

If there's truth to this... it sounds like they want to bring the fight not to the Model 3, but maybe the Model S or something like an electrified S-class or Porsche Taycan. That's not a big or lucrative market for any automaker. I see oodles of Model 3s but hardly any Model Xs or S-es in the area. 

Which is, to say, on a related note, I do think Ford has a shot with the Mustang Mach-E, as it aims right in that target market for some pretty compelling prices.

I suspect Lucid is following Tesla's strategy: start with high-end customers who won't mind being early adopters or dealing with limited numbers, and work your way down as you improve economies of scale. And in this category, catching people's attention means outperforming everyone.
