I don't even live in a big city nor metro, yet the rent here would eat the majority or all of that.  What sucks, talking to some folks, there are companies already doing pay cuts.  One chap who is a sys admin in Chicago had his pay reduce by 15%.    :I  So far both my parents still got their jobs.  Though I worry for them as they are both in the 60-70 age range, especially my Mom as she works at a Wal-Mart (o my the stories she has told me this year).

I consider myself lucky because I’m still healthy and employed, and the company I work for is considered essential by the local judge so we can operate. However, I’m at about a 45% pay cut due to a significant reduction in hours. I’ll make it work but only because I had money at hand already, though depending on the duration of all this it may get difficult.

:I  Darn, seems a good bit of folks are going to have tight time with money.

By the looks where I work on the base, talk was to hunker down harder into beginning of May.  Now, talk of all the way through May.  Already since beginning of last week, mandated 100% face coverings no matter which building one is at on the base.

I need to actually 3D print out some ear relief stuff.  As folks on base are complaining about the masks hurting their ears.  Considering a lot of folks' relatives made masks and help source some for all of us.  I can help out that way.

The best bet I think is to simply assume the machine will be pwnd by some criminal.  Try to limit the damage.  Make sure bank account data and whatnot isn’t on it when you turn it over.  Limit the damage.  That which does not kill us makes us stronger.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

The seemingly terrible trouble a singular large country is having dealing with all this.  I am pretty sure most of the issues you agree with and understand, but every now and then we get a few people who are adamant this isn't as bad as it is because to accept that it is as bad means accepting a few hard truths about ones own country.  I am lucky, all our politicians (except a few minor ones and one moron) have been basically unanimous and helpful in how to deal with this, implementing the same strategies, mobilizing as much assistance as they can and not getting in each others way in doing that.  I say this with a left leaning state government and a right leaning federal government.  and both have been exceptional in dealing with it.  Sure we have the odd goof ball who can't see they are the same and still blames one because of the flag color rather than actions, but it is no where near as bad as actual issues that hamper progress.

As you can see I am trying to be realistic without it sounding like a dumb shit stir.  There are lots of hard working, genuine and intelligent people there,  they don't deserve the reputation they are getting because of their leaders and media.

All countries get that.   Australia is shit on almost daily for encryption issues when we actually have none, but hey why let a few facts get in the way of a good shit dig.  However this is different, it seems the facts are being bent to avoid introspective, not to rebut an outside opinion.

Other countries may get some of it, but the very culture here in the United States is looked at in disdain, if the global media outlets are to be believed. Religion, our constitution, cuisine, governmental structure, basically everything and every facet of our existence.

But to bring it back to the topic of covid19; Yes, there are plenty of stupid people here that don't listen to reason and ignore sound advice from medical professionals. Spring-breakers, people that were on cruises up to them getting shut down, people attending weddings and big parties in spite of suggestions and even orders/legislation against it, the whole lot of them are fools and are looked down at by those of us that didn't do all that.

My intention was not of a competition. It just saddens me that there are so many honest hard working people over there and a handful (in the media, on forums and in the government) are making the situation so much worse.    Talk about blaming the WHO, issues with testing,  civil liberties being raised as reasoning to lighten the restrictions (some even claiming the restrictions don't apply because of said liberties).  It just makes a hard situation even worse.  Even here in Australia I have encountered the personal liberties argument,  and we don't have any form of freedom on that scale in our constitution.

It is truthfully an affront to our civil liberties to be kept at home and told to not work, and I understand the issue those people have. But, this whole arrangement isn't a permanent one, and if people would just stay the course we could get through it to a fair degree in much less time. It is crappy but it will be worse if people don't listen and do what's needed right now.

I'm particularly miffed because I started social distancing about a month before any instruction was given about shelter-in place here. I've been within two meters of only three people in the last 2 months. So those dragging this on longer with their selfishness or bickering about their rights should have had the foresight, watched the news, and listened to the experts about how to deal with this situation. We'd now be weeks from getting freed-up here instead of months.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — Organizers of San Diego Comic-Con International have announced this year's five-day convention has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021.

https://www.cbs8.com/article/entertainment/events/comic-con/san-diego-comic-con-international-2020-canceled/509-1ea18509-fbe9-4510-8dca-31eb7f63bfb3

I already knew this was coming because they also canceled our County Fair. Still bummed because a customer showed me the roadmap on how to get a guaranteed spot to volunteer. I wanted a chance to meet Henry Cavill since The Witcher season 2 was in pre production. Ah, priorities.

San Diego will be impacted in the long-run because tourism takes up a big chunk of my city’s economy. We’ve already cut over 1,000 city jobs.

Clinical laboratory physicians and scientists at UC San Diego Health have launched a pair of serological tests that will look for novel coronavirus antibodies — evidence in persons tested that they have previously been infected by SARS-CoV-2, the viral cause of COVID-19, even if they never experienced tell-tale symptoms.

The effort will be overseen by the UC San Diego Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine (CALM), which houses the majority of UC San Diego Health’s Clinical Laboratories and related research activities and is already the hub for the health system’s in-house PCR-based diagnostic testing of patients and persons suspected of having COVID-19.

Operating hours for El Dorado Savings is really biting my Dad today. He’d lost his wallet, and bank is closed. An hour on hold with the call center so far (reduced or non-existent staff), and the online portion seems to be archaic enough as to not allow the card to be locked. :/

The protests to end lock-downs has reached my own city. In downtown no less, where the homeless are using the Convention Center for shelter to try and protect them from coronavirus. Watching live our hard work staying at home for a month going up in flames as I type this.

There's no fixing stupid and you can't allow yourself to worry about the actions of other people. Keep doing your bit and let natural selection take its course, that's all you can do.

Trump says they feel like they've been treated rough? In about 14 days a lot of them are going to feel much worse and it will only be their own fault. I wonder how many of them will go on to blame China because they gathered en masse and then all got sick?

Reopening doesn't mean mass gatherings though.

Theres still going to be restrictions in the areas that open up and if someone is high risk they will need to continue distancing themselves.

For the people that are low risk and who dont live with anyone high risk they can work and keep the economy going (to an extent atleast).

Remember not area is NYC. There are a lot of rural areas that can reopen and not have huge issues.

All I know is in America if you believe the death count it's about 5%. However they say a Corona infected person will infect about 3-5 people regardless of what we do. Current world infected count is 700+ with a death percentage of 7% roughly. So even if we only assume that those 700+ only infected one other person the death rate is significantly lower. How they count Corona deaths should be detailed a bit more clearly as in my opinion if someone has one bad infection away from dying well I'm not sure we should count that as strictly a Corona virus death. Then you factor in age etc. How much of the numbers is really explained to us. An if 80% are going to get it anyway like Cuomo mayor of nipple rings says then other then to flatten the curve like we did I say start opening this shit up. Your grandkids will be paying off this stimulus package we can't afford another. We can only borrow against ourselves for so long before the house of cards comes down.

Edit: Wouldn't be surprised if people werent tested and they just said they died from it because they appeared to have covid like symptoms. Or if the death is completely unrelated but the person was infected so they chalk it up to the virus.

7% of your population suddenly dying is a lot worse for the economy than shutting down for 3 months. For you guys a 7% mortality rate means that in the worse case, somewhere around 20 million people could die. Let that number sink in, 20 million people.

But hey, as long as the businesses keep making money, right.

I can't speak for you guys but here in England a death is attributed to COVID if the person tests positive for the disease either ante or post mortem and its deemed likely their death would not have occurred if they didn't have the disease. The chances of somebody with COVID dying of something unrelated to COVID is tiny and right now I think our doctors & nurses have better things to worry about than what the cause of death was for every patient they lose. Its an emergency situation and some leeway has to be given otherwise you end up with all your front line medical staff doing paperwork while patients are dying next to them.

Dutch government requested companies to come up with a corona app.

700+ companies / startups responded, 7 or so where selected and allowed to pitch on live tv.

24hrs later, the first dataleak was found:

https://nos.nl/artikel/2330975-datalek-in-corona-app-namen-e-mailadressen-en-wachtwoorden-op-straat.html

In a twist, the data wasnt even from the corona apo but from a different project (https://www.hartvannederland.nl/nieuws/2020/datalek-corona-app-covid19-alert/

The data was inadvertently uploaded to public github in "the rush to share the source" of the corona app.

That 7% is the world population confirmed case numbers not the US think you need to reread my post. Based on how contagious this virus is and on stats from Scandinavia that said 3% had it that weren't even tested the death rate plumets. In America there's probably twice or more infected than was confirmed making the death rate much lower then the 5% it's at right now. If it was truly 5% we'd be seeing far more deaths right now based on how fast it spreads.
