There's a lot of people building homelabs using NUCs. Join your local vmWare User Group then you can get access to almost the complete suite of vmWare for $100US per year. SuperMicro has some really nice small, power-efficient Xeon-D systems that are also sweet for home labs. Tinkertry.com is a good resource as well as the folks over at servethehome.com.

 

I'm sure you can probably bash something together with Proxmox or other open source alternative. I just play with the stuff a little on the side but there are others here with way more experience.

it works alright its about 5-6 hrs a project on average 4-5 if i disable CPU but it sits idle quite a bit so i keep the cpu churning too.  ints in my XPS 9575 and keep at a nice 80c max with the fans at just below full tilt but the amazing thing is the computer is still cool enough to use.

They update every 3 hours (8x a day). Stanford (foldingathome.org) updates every hour on the hour but the data is usually 15 minutes old to goive time for the collection servers time to update the stats servers but with all the issues flying around lately there have been some strange bumps. A small update one hour then a huge update the next. Part of the problem is when your WU fails to send to the Work Server it next tries the Collection Server and if that works then the results have to be shipped through another node to get to the stats servers.

Yeah.  I personally chose to sit this out and any bonus points because I can still contribute well over average to the cause so even if you aren't participating in the competition you're still very much helping, just not getting the competition feel-good points. 😛

The only reason I have two is because a family member upgraded in an attempt to rid themselves of an unknown hardware problem and left the card with me until I get around to selling it which may take a while if this mess keeps up. I'm gonna get every clock outta this thing as possible without OC.

BTW it was a weird board issue.  Fixed since then.
