LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

Yeah, I'm not in love with my temps either with a 212 and a 3600... Steady on at 70. Would like to be lower, especially with a 65w chip. No PBO.

My RX590 isn't helping though more than likely. Then again case temp is 37 so not too bad.

it definitely can test out your cooling strategy!

With just the 3950x on water and 2080ti on stock air, with both folding its no trouble keeping temps under 70 without cranking up the fans (near silent), but adding the x480 adds enough heat into the case that i have to turn fans up to a noticeable level to hold the same temps

the way ive got the AIO set up its pulling cold air and pushing the warm into the case, which isnt the greatest but id rather keep the cpu cool and have case temps rise a bit. fortunately the case has alot of side venting to dump the heat

What I found was the only reasonable way to keep 2 GPUs folding running cool in a case was to use something like a Fractal Meshify S with a bunch of 140mm Noctua iPPC2000s.

I've since given up and just have a dual axial fan cooled GPU as the bottom and a Hybrid GPU for the upper. Results in a lot less noise from the Chassis fans.

I'm running 6 GPUs in a mining frame with a Ryzen 2700 in an x570 motherboard and in the open air frame the GPUs have lots of air to breathe and run at between 58-69C. It's quieter than the compressor in the Fridge I have in the basement too.

Hey LLT Folding team,

I heared a rumour that you need some server power (for hosting a WU server)?

Is this still the case?  I've got some spare compute power in the Cloud (AWs) and might be able to run a server for a stint.  What OS/Apps/Stats did you need?

LTT is building a Work Server but you'd have to ask them @jakkuh_t

Honestly I guess with THAT many cores it's to be expected?

I got rid of all but 2 of my old GPUs after I finished my doctorate (data analytics). Had 10 running in a mining frame, but sold all but 2, a 980ti and rx570. Have them on an open "test bench" style setup with an 8086K. My actual computer has 2 1080tis and 3950x. Also have my laptop doing what it can with a 1080 max-q and mobile processor. Temps not a problem with the open test bench with OC set at 4.8 all core with tower cooler. Temps get pretty high in the case of my usual rig when everything is 100% even though I'm running with 3 radiators and Noctua fans in push/pull config and 3 fans for the case without a rad. (it is a desk/pc case, so lots of room)

I am using Core-temp to monitor CPU and either MSI afterburner or Asus GPU-Tweak for the GPUs. (The icons are next to each other on the desktop, so which ever I click on first). The GPUs seem to hold between 1950 - 2150 MHz with voltage at max allowed by architecture. GPUs are Strix 1080ti and CPU is a 3950x @ 4.0 all cores.

WooHoo - fah4 and fah5.eastus.cloudapp.azure.com just showed up on the Server Stats page.

So it looks like the servers Dr. Bowman was tweeting about are getting placed.

It appears to have taken 2-3 days for fah3 to get into production. Hopefully these will get into production sooner.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a couple of cheap rackmounts and creating a cluster - think of any way I could create failover groups other than with Hyper-V's failover cluster manager?  Would love a full linux solution, mostly because i'm not made of money licensing wise!

I use Proxmox for my server cluster with Ceph running underneath for host failure tolerant storage. Works great and performs well.

The F@H server page has some juicy changes today. Looks like 2 more Azure servers and the software version over the course of the day has been changing from 9.5.2 to 9.6 across their servers, must be what some of the downtime has been. Hopefully that paired with their new Oracle cloud server and potentially other resources means they are gearing up for a dramatic increase in WU deliveries.

@GOTSpectrum Any thought about dropping the point requirement for this?  I've got everything turned up, which is unfortunately non-GPU as per usual, but still spend a ton of time waiting on WUs.

Removed the side panel and have a small fan blowing air on gpu and cpu at least overnight while Im not using the desk.

Cpu temps dropped from 70c to around 50, sometimes rising to 60c.  Gpu temps decreased by about 5 degrees

Now have 3 cpu threads active and folding comfortably.
