Apple unveils AirPods Pro

Why do I care that a company is putting dumb names on products to make it look like something it's not? Because I can.

Why do you care about me caring about the AirPod Pro?

Airpod Pro as a name doesn't work, that would imply there is only 1 earphone as opposed to airpods which implies 2. Pro for apple doesn't mean its for professionals, it means it is the best they have to offer in that area, iPhone 11 pro is their best iPhone, iPad Pro is the best iPad and so on

He thinks the original air pods have "Incredible sound"? *shudders*

If that's what he thinks incredible sound is, hard pass.

The Lightning EarPods that came with iPhone XR do have really good sound. Totally on level of AKG's that I had before. I then bought jack version of EarPods but they don't sound as good. I hate all these silicone deep inside ear earphones...

What would make these 'pro' would be if they had something connecting them together so the aren't so easy to lose, and maybe an 'offline' mode so they can be used without using the battery, and if they could physically connect to the device as well using, say, a small cylindrical connector.

Also, Airpods Pro is just an awful name, I could tolerate Airpod Pro, but that 's' just makes it sound awkward

Airpod Pros?

EFF YOU APPLE BRING BACK FORCE TOUCH TO iPHONES

Sadly, I don't think that's happening anytime soon, if at all.  Reportedly, 3D Touch limited battery capacity and possibly other internal features.  That and, like it or not, most people didn't use it.  It makes more sense in AirPods, Apple Watches and other devices where you'd otherwise lose significant functionality.

The AirPod singular could be referring to the pod they charge in, not the individual earpieces.

Then what do you call the buds themselves? I think the name they picked is the one that makes the most sense once you realise that pro doesn't mean its aimed at professionals

I balked at the $169 pricetag of the original Apple AirPods plus the charging case, these AirPods Pro are way too much for me, but I'm probably not Apple's target market.

Also, I don't see what's so 'Pro' about these earphones.

Yeah, but both of those are pretty shit tbh. I mean, they might be good in terms of included items, but when it comes to something you'd buy after the fact...they just shit the bed. Even MKBHD says the AirPods have pretty poor sound quality. Have you tried different ear tips? Some people just try the one size some come with and say they all suck when, really, they're just not using it properly.

Surely a real 'pro' wouldn't want active noise cancellation because it messes with the audio.

IMO there's no excuse for poor passive noise cancellation, if you have to add active noise cancellation, it means you need a better design

I don’t think you know how headphones work nor do you know the feature set of the Pro AirPods.

Pretty much,   sound is subjective, so it is going to be hard to claim one way or the other.  I have a set of $18 BT silicon in ears that use on the train, if I put them in the normal way they sound like shit, but if I rotate them upside down in my ear canal they sound amazing (for $18 BT).  I have had the same experience with sound quality on many ear buds.  I have never had anything beat regular headphones so I don't understand why anyone would pay $250 (assuming it's US dollars) when you can get knockoff's from Kmart for A$35 (about $25US).

Well, I've had BT[codec hell], name vs store brand, cheapos, and "audiophile" buds/IEMs.  BT has gotten better over time from what I noticed, but still it's not as great as wired.  I've used skullcandy, no name walmart/other department brands, etc.  My issues with those is they either fail due to craptastic build quality, or the sound is off to me.  The only buds/iems I've ever enjoyed were ibasso IT-01s.   They have not only lasted me the longest, but have the sound I prefer+the right amount of bass without destroying the audio quality for songs like this.

This is the song I use to test audio quality+bass across equipment for what.  There was a pair of 100 something buck Skullcandys that sounded decent enough for what they were, but the build quality is what I haven't returned to that brand.

My headphone of choice is the senns 280 pro.  They don;t sound good to everyone but they have a better flat response than most and can be pushed around with the EQ a fair bit.  I use them as my personal datum for all headphones.

Yeah, I had a $60 pair of Monster in ears I got on Black Friday for a killer deal many, many years ago and the sound quality was excellent. Though, stepping up to the $180 RHAs I got there was a noticeable difference, and then once again to the $300ish pair I have now. Is it $240 better? Perhaps not, but for the amount I use them it's worth it.

Have you ever used much higher end headphones before? You might understand why they're priced the way they are a little better, much like people who complain about expensive jeans, yet have never bothered owning something other than what they get at Walmart or a middle-of-the-road retail store.

Interesting, these aren't dramatically more than the Jabra Elites I was looking at. Having ambient passthrough AND active noise cancelling as options in the same in-ear is a nice touch.

Not a primary apple user, but if these would work cross platform I'm definitely interested.

Yes I have. Headphones worth enough to make me reluctant to pick them up just in case I break them and have to pay for them.

  • 3 weeks later...

After having a pair of Powerbeats Pro for the last two months I added a set of Airpods Pro to my collection of earphones. I absolutely love the noise reduction. It is just so good that I have taken to wearing them whenever I need to concentrate on something in the office, just to shut out the general noise here. They are also great when I am working in the data centre cutting out the din of all those fans droning away. The Powerbeats are a great set of earphones, and I will still use them when outside doing active stuff where I am likely to loose the airpods pro. Having said that, carrying around the large charge case the Powerbeats have is a bit of a pain.

One thing the Powerbeats have over the Airpods Pro is the volume buttons.and control buttons. The physical buttons on the Powerbeats are superb, far easier IMO than the touch switch on the Airpods Pro. Other than that, the sound quality between the two is very similar with the noise cancelling off, but it is with the noise cancelling on that the airpods come into their own. It means I can use a lower volume yet still be engaged the the audio. Having the audio lower is great as it means others in the office cannot hear my choice of tunes.
